Hood numbers
Did all 1971 LS5 hoods come with the '454' numbers on the hood? The car I'm having restored has been painted and the hood does not have them but I forgot to look on the bottom to see if there are holes that have been filled.

Where is the best place or places to order the 454 numbers? And if there are no holes is there any templates or features to work from when installing?

Trim Parts has two different US made versions, one with pins like original, and one with double sided tape in place of the pins. The Trim Parts numbers aren't cheap. The three piece set of 4-5-4 with pins on the back, sell for $50, $100 for both sides of the hood. The numbers with double sided tape are sold individually for $19 each.
The foreign made hood numbers come in a set of six, to do both sides of the hood. The foreign ones come with mounting pins and speed nuts, and sell for $30 for all six numbers.
I'm familiar with both the US and foreign ones, and can't say that there is much difference in the quality of them.
The 71 Assembly Manual has dimensions for drilling the mounting holes.

Occasionally, you can find original factory numbers [used] at some Corvette part swap meets. Less cost....real numbers....not as 'purty'.

I won't bet the house on it.. .but I feel pretty darn sure the holes were in the same location as the 427 numbers... if so use this diagram I made a few years ago off an original hood... there is even a template on this pdf... as long as you can scale it to size.

Just to bump this question back up- how would I know if I have a factory LT-1 hood vs after-market? It's an LS5 car with no '454' numbers on the hood and no holes were filled so it is not original.

So thanks to Jughead for the dimensions and to Willcox for the positioning info- I made a quick aluminum template for the '454' numbers and left 1/4" on each end to line up with the chrome trim, and the top should line up with the hood ridge.

I got the hood home today and after closer inspection found out that there were some emblem holes that were filled in so I was excited that it was the original hood. Then as I picked away at the paint to uncover each hole position something didn't look right. Turns out the hole pattern matches the Willcox photos for a 427 (not a 454). Looks like I have a hood that came off a 427 car but at least I knew where the first '4' belongs on each side so I had something to line my template up with.
