VIN body and frame 72 Coupe
So I found the VIN on the frame in two places.
Top of frame at driver's seat location.
Top of frame at driver's side 'hump' over the rear axle.
Car's VIN is 2S526310
Frame's VIN is 2S526510
Factory do this?
The 310 puts it within 200 of the last one built.
The 510 says.... WOW..
(I think)

Hi AG,
Yes, the frame was stamped twice with the car's vin at St.Louis.
The stamp should be the same as the vin on the a-pillar and engine/ transmission pad.
One can be seen with the body in place but seeing the other requires the body to be lifted.
Regards,
Alan
Wasn't the vin of the last 72 built 27004?

yes, I understand, he is trying to figure out why his frame and body VIN number is different.
I thought the "AO" date might help him clarify the mismatch, in VIN#.
I said paint date, I meant frame paint date.

Hi,
Sometimes the stamped digits are difficult to decipher… might that be the case AG's frame.. a 3 and a 5?

Alan

Hi AG,
Excellent close-up photos.
The VIN tag photo seems to clearly indicate the 2 rivets used to mount it are unpainted.
There has been some discussion over the years as to just when the tag was put into place….. before or after 'black-out'. Your photo certainly seems to indicate that it was after blackout.
Thanks for taking the time to post the photos.

Not sure what your plans are for the car, but there seems to be a significant amount of rust around the VIN tag. Unfortunately, the more you dig, the more you usually find. Plan accordingly.

Birdcage replacement and VIN issue
Federal Law states that as long as it doesn't involve Fraud or Theft, it's up to the individual states to handle this question.
Therefore, in some states it's a Felony, as it is here in N.C..
And in some states it's legal, as it is in Georgia.
Thus my body birdcage will go to Georgia, where a shop will replace the windshield frame and T roof separator.
I'll get an invoice for the repair, which will show N.C. that it was done correctly. (just not their way).

Because what I want to do to repair the car is Illegal in N.C., I've done some research, and have found out the following.

YEAH....it really sucks that I can not do anything about that here in NC.
GLAD that at least Georgia is good with it and it is not that far from NC for you to travel. WELL WORTH the travel for that repair....in my opinion.

I think you are OK.
I think both frame stamps say 526310. Look carefully at the first '5' in the stamp, and compare if the the '3' in the stamp. Notice how the bottom loop of the '5' is different that the loop of the '3'.
Good luck with your car.
