Default 1972 Carpet / Seatbelt

Do any of you have a pic of the carpet at the plastic cover / retractor loops underneath the seats?
I just put in new carpet and can't figure out where there is supposed to be carpet & where it's supposed to be cut out.

Also, looking at your pics, is the little plastic cover over the retractors even needed?

Not really, it does keep crap from out of the seat-belt mechanism

Years and years ago I read in a magazine to remove the covers and it would help let the belts dry if they got wet (like vettes leak or something) so I removed mine when I was doing the seats way back when

When I re-did the interior I cut and did the carpet as shown above after confirming what it should look like, but left a strip out at the sill to hide the edges, you can just barely see it here. I also used some door guard on the edge of the plastic shield etc

The metal loops of course have to be there.

Shortly after than I changed and went to the f-body 3 point belts that don't have the retractor under the seat.... If I didn't have the holes all cut I would have mounted them over top of the carpet and left the shields off but hey, that's what happens

I followed Ernie Willcox advice any made a small slit in the new carpet for the seat belt to come through, instead removing a large area the size of the plastic belt retractor cover.

I originally had all mounted UNDER my carpet with a slit for the belt to protrude (see drivers side pic). Then, after searching the interwebs I realized that was incorrect, so I put everything on TOP of the carpet, even the retractor and loop (see pass side pic).

I hadn't cut the huge notch out on both sides yet, thank God.

I had originally done this (see pics in above post). My driver side is currently like this, I may re-do (again) my passenger side to match the drivers side.

The 1971's had a grommet in this location. Mine is a 1st day production 1972 so there's already a TON of 1971 parts in the mix. I may opt for these grommets later on.

I read your older post about these guards being cut with a hatchet or something. That's exactly right!
