Tell me about your aftermarket exhaust! Looking for advice.

If it were my car I would install a set of 1 5/8 long tube headers and take it to your favorite local muffler shop for sone 2 1/4 inch dual exhaust and use the mufflers you already have.

I like the volume level I've got currently. It's louder than your average Honda, but it's not so loud that I get annoyed. If I had to guess, I'm sure it sounded about like it does now from the factory (minus the backfire!) This might be a dumb question, but would removing the cat, switching to true duals, adding headers, or any combination of these drastically change the sound I'd hear? Is it mostly influenced by the mufflers?

It will be louder but think most of it overall is just mufflers
They dont make that big a power difference unless you have a big stroke or very high rpm
Plenty of 10 sec cars out there running turbos and 2.5 in pipes.
marketing will have you thinking youre choking an sbc to death if it doesnt make 100db at idle lol

At iddle, I think a part of drone already which hits at 1400 RPM
At 3000, light foot
Any idea what guiet mufflers should switch to? Stock apearance needed, 2". I could go stock from Corvette Central but any other suggestions?

I have MAD true duals on my '80 with turbo mufflers (so no cat). Added a crossover pipe too. Engine has been modified to older L46 350/350 specs with modern aftermarket heads. Current mufflers are trashed and need to be replaced.
The '80 stock mufflers are originally oval but most likely designed for use behind a cat so they would be louder than stock without a cat. I want quiet.
Looking at using the mufflers advertised as '74 "oval style" replacements. Shooting for flow/sound like stock '74 system but look more like '80. Factory original '74 muffs were round and will look odd on an '80 IMHO so the oval replacements seem like they way to go for me.
Thats the plan anyway.

Mine are just LOUDDDDD
But you can put loud or silenced inserts inside them, so that's cool.
I am taking my audio out of the car: there is no use.
Inside the city, it is really LOUD. And I love it

It's been a while since I have posted and I wanted to give an update on what I decided to do for now.
I had my local weld shop fix up my current manifolds after I cut off the AIR tubes. They filled the holes, removed the broken studs, filled in cracks, and removed even the part of the tube that was inside the manifold. They look awesome and I can't wait to put them on.
On the engine, I removed the smog pump, all AIR injection tubing, solenoids, valves, etc.
I am replacing my OEM cat with a Walker 15618 direct fit cat. I thought about knocking the honeycomb out of the original cat, but I wanted quiet more than anything. I've got plans for a nice sound system and I'd like to be able to hear it.
I'll try to post photos of everything once it's installed!

the cat that you have is very restrictive.i would open it up or replace with new one.were your headers cracked at collector?did each port have a little tube inside?

I've got a new cat on order to replace the original one I pulled out. Yes, the injection tubes go into the ports at least 3/4". They were all removed when the holes were welded shut. I did have cracking around the collectors, which got fixed as well. Once my gaskets come in, I'll get these put back on the engine.

surprised at 90 something db from magnaflow thats what my dynomax ultraflows do?
there used to be a muffler shop who sold some "white box" turbos...they were dirt cheap and had the internal S that the dynomax have. Pretty good muffler..love the old school sound may even put a set on the "el just so I can get on it more and not worry about someone a block a way waiting to write me up.

They are 407 stainless. (ie, low nickle and chromium content, mostly mild steel). That means you can weld on it with standard rod you would use for mild steel without issue.
I did mine myself using a hobby 60 amp stick welder. Went fine.
