Default Help - additional stamp over VIN block stamp

On a '79 I'm buying, there is a stamp (Y38) over the visible VIN stamp on the block. The block VIN matches the the car's VIN and all the other numbers match and look legit. I'm just wondering if this extra stamp could be stamped at the time of an engine rebuild? Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

Possibly. Was the engine rebuilt at some point in the past?

Hi g,
Occasionally/often when an engine is rebuilt the engine block is 'decked'.
This machining may remove enough material from the top surfaces of the block that the original engine stamps are lost as a result
It sounds like in the case of the engine you're looking at the engine was rebuilt but the block wasn't decked.
If you're interested in 'originality' this is a 'good' thing!
Regards,
Alan
