The problem is that GM moved the back fiberglass wall 4" to the front in mid 71, I think. The latch has to be made four inches longer to catch the shorter fiberglass tray, unless there is a longer version of the fiberglass tray. And yes the "1970" tray that I bought has the push button on it. Lou.

Hi Lou,
The tray on my 71 (with the spring steel latch) is 16" front to back through the center of the tray.
Are you saying the tray changed size or was the location of the latch (of what ever type) was moved?
Added: I think I now see the answer… the tray moved toward the rear of the compartment.
Regards,
Alan
Here's where the 72 pushbutton style tray latches. I can see what you're running in to when I compare the location to the spring type.

I love taking the back window out and cruising in my 71. The only issue with it is that a hat can be sucked off your head and out the back window before you can catch it. I look for hats with lanyards on them now. ;-)

Hi Alan, My original 68 fiber board window tray was a lot deeper, front to back. I am guessing that it was at least 20" This 72 tray is also 16" wide, like yours. The 68 tray was crude fiber board and had spring loaded hinges connected permanently to the tray. It was murder to have to unscrew the eight tiny screws, while the tray was angled down, to remove it.
I bought this tray before I knew about this forum and later, on this forum, found out that GM moved the back wall closer to the seats. That is why the tray is about 4" not deep enough to work on my car. I would have to fabricate a 4 or 5 inch bracket to try to catch the push button on this tray. Or add 4" to the way the hinges mount to my back wall. I was really dumb to get rid of my 68 only fiber board tray. The 69 fiber board tray has removable hinges like your tray. I bought this tray that was advertised as a "70" tray and I thought that it would fit my 68.
The fiberglass tray is really beautifully made, compared to the crude fiber board one's. Lou.
