So I am trying to replace my original leaf spring with a composite. I did not get very far.
I put the car on jack stands, and then took a block of wood clamped to the leaf spring and attempted to jack the spring up enough to take the "weight" off the bolt. When i do this it pushes the bolt up into the trailing arm at an angle that makes it nearly impossible to get a wrench on the bolt to attempt to break the castle nut. I tried getting a wrench onto the bolt with it on the ground and then trying to raise it up but that didnt work either.
Looking for suggestions, I am almost to the point of trying to cut the bolt in half but not a fan of it due to safety reasons. There isnt alot of room to jack the spring up because it pushes the bolt up into the trailing arm and leaves very little room to make the cut.
I put the wrench on the bolt before jacking up the spring.
What size bolt is this. The castle nut is 7/8 but I for the life of me cannot get a wrench on the bolt to save my life. If i wasnt so cheap and hard headed i would have taken this to the shop to have them do it..
take the pressure off by jacking up the T arm to near horizontal ( with a second jack), also do this when you are ready to install the bolt for your new spring and it will drop in easy.
Thanks everyone for their help, I tried this and the good news is the bolts are off. Bad news is, it helped make my decision on new trailing arms a whole lot easier, the wrench tore through the side of the trailing arm when i was using a breaker bar to get the bolt off. So off to get new TA's I go.
