In case you haven’t started on this project yet, consider that your compressor might not need replacing. The clutch bearing or entire clutch can be easily replaced and may have been the cause of the noise. It seems likely (because in Europe) that you’ll have to switch to 134 a. If so you need to blow or flush out the mineral oil that was used with the R-12. After replacing or repairing the compressor and leak checking, why not just charge with 134a and see how it works?

I believe old R-12 hoses work fine with 134a and the smaller molecule is just a myth.
