Default Any thoughts on this?

This is glued to the ashtray cover in my car. It's an enamel pin that is a copy of the mission patch for STS (Space shuttle mission) 51C. I'm thinking that this car may have some connection to NASA. It's a 1977 and I haven't had a chance to research past owners yet. I know this is a really long shot, but I've seen some amazing things happen on this forum, so I thought I would throw it out there.

Thanks in advance!

All the names of the crew on that shuttle, that's badazz. Would love to know the story why that is glued to your ashtray, if it's a good one

Wasn't there an article on the forum recently about Corvettes and astronauts? Something about Chevrolet giving them special deals or actually giving them Corvettes?
It would be cool to own a Corvette previously owned by one of our nations astronauts

So I finally got some time to do some research and I think I've narrowed it down to two of the astronauts who were on STS-51C with the car most likely having belonged to Loren Shriver. Next step is a title search to see if I can confirm that.

One of the articles I found mentioned him in a photo with a corvette, but I couldn't find the picture. Hopefully I can dig that up.

I just did a Google search and located a couple pictures.

First picture with the same emblem and the 5 astronauts.

Second picture is of Loren Shriver - emblem is on right side of his uniform.

Cool stuff.

good luck with your search!!

You won't find a lot about flight STS-51-C as it was classified.

Sad that Onizuka (and the others) was killed about a year later during the Challenger launch...

Contact Shriver directly. You'll probably find it's not that difficult. Send him a picture or two, see what he says. You might get a picture or two back.

FIf I had something like that in my car I would start searching my title back as far as I could go. Then compare names with people involved in this man's past. Fascinating story and kudos to you if you can find out if your car has some connection to him and you are able to preserve that little bit of his memory. Good luck on your mission

Wow! Thanks for the input, everyone. This community is the best!

The Estes Park connection is what makes me think that Astronaut Shriver may have owned it. Estes Park is about 50 miles from where Dad lived when he bought the car. One of the other astronauts on that mission (Gary Payton) teaches or used to teach at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, so there are two possibilities I need to check out. I'm leaning more toward Shriver because I found an article that mentions him possibly owning a Corvette.
