Rebuilt seats, I no longer fit
A few months back I had new foam and seat covers installed. Now my head hits the top of the car and I have to be nodding to drive the thing with the T-Top on. I have tried ot adjust the seat to no avail. I am only about 5'11" so it is not because I am unusually tall.
Has this happend to anyone else? Do I just have to put up with this until I wear the foam down?
The seats were rebuilt with Al Knock covers and foam.

Hi c,
The new foam padding is really quite puffy. So I can understand what you're experiencing although I didn't find that when I used Al Knock foam.
Have you considered removing the 2 rubber bumpers from the bottom of the seat back? This will allow the back of the seat to recline a little more and tip your torso back a bit too.
That MIGHT help with some headroom for you.
Regards,
Alan
Removing the 2 metal posts allows the back to recline even further.

I installed C5 seats after I rebuilt them and I felt like my forehead was above the windshield frame. I measured and remeasured and they seamed very close in height but they felt too tall. So I pulled them back out and built custom brackets and had to cut and fit them multiple times beffore they felt like my old 68 seats. After finally getting them to an acceptable height, I happened to sit in the old seats as they were sitting on the floor and it felt like I hit bottom. I tilted them on their side and pushed the seat in towards their bottom and it looked like the springs were just stretching by hand. I finally figured it out that I was sitting on the floor of my car and that explains why my legs fell asleep on long rides. I'm 5'10"

The same thing happened to me. I'm 6'4 so I never fit that great but after I rebuilt the seat I have to slouch way down so I'm not looking at the windshield frame. I even went as far as to leave a couple bags of pellets on them all winter to compress the foam.

I just put new Al Knoch foams in my seats. The old ones were pretty saggy but the new ones are almost too tall. I can barely get my thighs under the steering wheel and I'm fairly skinny. (6'1 175). I don't have tilt. I used the old seat covers and it all fit well. The old foams were just very compressed. I do feel like I need to slide down in the seat a bit to get where I want to be looking thru the windshield. Maybe they'll break in after a while?
Did the weight bags on the seats help?

Not really, I upgraded to a tilt column and have it all the way up. Now I'm looking for a correct looking wheel that's a smaller diameter for a little extra room.

they should be broken in about another 50 years,
I agree remove T-top liner for max. headroom.
pull the seats, remove covers, either adjust springs mechanically and position lower.
or cut the cushion down some to get you lower.
take the seat out and explain the problem to who ever upholstered it.
they should be able to do the above. no problem.
take the seat in, Not the car.

Yes, I expect they will not break in anytime soon. I'm ok with where my seats are. It's better than feeling like I was sitting on a saggy couch.
Pulling the seats and cutting them down would be a huge effort and based on the way the covers fit would probably produce undesirable results. After going through the process myself, I would highly recommend not doing that.

I hate to say it.. but the CA seat foam is a better product and the only foam we'll install in our shop. I love Al to death, but his foam is way to hard.

I thought Al Knoch was the best of the best and the price was competitive. I'm not unhappy with it, it's just tight getting in now. I'm surprised the old seat covers still fit on it.

I sent the following message to Al Knock through his website. I hope he see it. Does anyone have his direct email address?
Mr. Knock Several month ago I purchased seat covers and new foam for my 1972 Corvette. I was told that your product was the best available and I have spared no expense in refurbishing my low mileage survival car the so I selected your product to use. I had the seats redone at a professional shop. When I got them back, they looked great, but the foam was so thick that there is no way to adjust them so that my head does not hit the roof of the car. I posted about this issue on the Corvette forum and the responses I got were basically that I should have heard of this issue and if I would have ordered from CA they would have fit properly. An old car is a challenge to drive anyway, but with these seats as they are it eliminates any pleasure I get from driving. I have tried adjusting the seats, but it will not adjust low enough. IS there anything you can advise. I have already invested 1500 in parts and labor and my seats are worse than I started with.

i'm interested to hear what you get back. I also sent a similar email about a week ago, but never got a reply. I need to follow up. I'm very disappointed as well, but I did the covers myself and the though of having to redo them is not a good one.

I tried driving with the T-Tops off and I had crouch over to see past the top bar on the windshield.

One solution that might help a little is to put the seat shims under the front of both rails, effectively tilting the seat back. It'll make any issues you have with the steering wheel worse but it'll buy you a little headroom.

I received a satisfactory response from the nice sales manager (Melissa) at Al Knock. I am sending them my seat bottoms and they will replace the foam for $100.00 total. This is to cover the cost of the lower cushions. They are not going to charge me any labor.
I am very pleased with this resolution and the quick response from Melissa.

I wanted to get new foams. I was told not to and use my originals that were still in good shape. Glad I listened to the advice. Seats came back from the upholstery shop looking great with new Al Knoch leather.
