Buying Vette in Ohio
Hello everyone,
I just signed up to the forum - although i have been an unregistered viewer for some time.
I am located in Boise Idaho and just purchased 72 vette via eBay.
The seller graciously offered to hold the car so someone can verify its condition (the car is in Toledo OH). If anyone is interested in checking it out that would be great! Doesn't need to be a c3 guy - just need the primarily paint looked at.
I look forward to talkin to you all in the threads!!!
Thanks!

Hi FS,
I tried to open the photos you attached to an earlier post, but couldn't.
Perhaps you might try to attach them to a post in this thread to get some folks thoughts about the paint.
Regards,
Alan

the paint looks great , as does most of the rest of the car .
But just be careful as the frame has been patched , looks to be before it was blasted and painted so its all neat looking but it's still a (very nicely made ) cap over the bottom right hand corner to forward under the door . It stops just short of the transmission cross member .
If he has had the rust cut out properly (which it sounds like as he says its dipped ) the rust shouldn't come back but just how good was the welding work done ??? at least you know to ask him now and see what he says .
Might also want a closer look at the front left side bottom A arm mounting bracket(s) it looks like the big bracket has copped a blow from something .
The steering rag joint doesn't look right as well.

Yeah, I'd look at those "molded" end caps on the frame kickups very closely. They do sell repair pieces for those as they commonly rust out, but they are generally installed in a more factory style manner. At the very least it's a flag to check the frame for rust and damage thoroughly.
It's unfortunate that it was once a big block car but it appears the big block hood has gone elsewhere.
Seeing how there's no engine and the car will be an NOM when it's finished, most of the value here is the new paint. Inspect it very closely. Look at the seams and elsewhere for body repairs that are showing back up.

Hi FS,
In the photos the paint looks quite good.
There may be some surprises when seeing the paint in person, but maybe not… but that's why you're asking for someone to take a peek at the car.
I'll not comment about the rest of the car, or the price you paid, since you didn't ask about that.
Regards,
Alan

FYI- I already have an engine I would like to drop into a car, and the sale is not final. He has given me the option to back-out, although I would rather not if the deal is right (considering it is very close to what I am looking for).

sandblasted and dipped when? Paint looks nice interior ok
Strikes me as a bodyshop owner may have been trying to piece together an abandoned project put a coat of paint on and is flipping it. Id run....
Edit: pics of it current show an old crusty frame and the rest underneath fresh spraypaint over everything, dirt crust even bushings have it glopped on sorry I call bs.
The pics of some vette with the body off are pics of very old polaroids.
BEtter get this one looked at in person.

Thank you for the advice everyone!
I have decided to back out, possibly preventing the purchase of a poorly done restoration. As a rookie to corvettes, your guys' help and knowledge is priceless.
I am still looking, and will be sure to run the next car by this forum again.
Regards,
Bryce

frame pics don't seem to add up. if you look at the one old photo of bare frame, everything is nice and painted, however the shots he shows under the hood the frame looks untouched in that area? maybe it could be a bunch of dust and dirt from doing body work, but the wheel wells are clean and most of the firewall looks clean.

Could be just the camera angle, but it looks like the seat belt support underneath the floor board was pop riveted. Maybe no big deal, but I believe those call for bucked rivets.

Good call to backed out if you don't know what your getting into. The frame is too much of an unknown and I don't trust rattle can restorations.
Looks like paint and interior is all this car has going for it.

Yep. I decided to look for a solid chrome bumper car here on the west coast.

Try to find a good running car that everything, or at least most everything is working. I found my 73 at a car show for sale and got it at a good price. Mine was untouched, I'm the 3rd owner, it runs really well at 108,000 miles. Most of the maintenance items were replaced over the years so its not all original but it is a numbers matching big block, California car.
I've bought several cars over the years that were partial or partially restored and those always turned into nightmares. This time I paid more upfront but have a solid canvas to start with. Be careful, don't buy anything you can't see with your own eyes and since you don't know Corvettes, take someone with you who does or pay for a professional inspection prior to purchasing. I paid $250.00 and the guy crawled over and under mine and gave me a printout list of everything the car needed from new bushings to the fact the clock worked intermittently. Good luck, be patient and invest wisely.
