Default L-88 Engine Pad

Need some opinions on this engine pad. Strong documentation. Appears to be original. Thanks.

Maybe it's the photo, but I'm not seeing any of the typical broach marks and some of the stampings appear to be missing. Has the block been decked a bit?

Edit: I am at a loss. If you are capable of writing a check for $X00,000.00, why are you using a "forum" to help in your decision making?

I would not trust anything L88 from a numbers standpoint without iron clad documentation and several expert inspections.

Default Ahhhhhhhh, could be original.

No pad is without question, period!

But, yours is a sad pad. When things weren't all that important.... A machinist would very lightly deck the block and try to save the numbers. Or, they might just barely deck the block and parts of the numbers just happen to survive.

So, you see machine marks and you see the partial destruction of the letters. Knowing the history of the car and the owners is helpful.

Unfortunately, people will make a big stink about it regardless. It could easily be the real deal.

If the car is nice and has documentation, I would deduct for the damage to the pad, but I wouldn't let it stop me. If you are going to show it to a bunch of people, be ready to take a lot of poop off of others and their opinions.

Just my humble opinion

Hi tf,
"No pad is without question, period!"

I have to say I disagree with that statement.

Alan

It looks like numbers were removed and other numbers restamped into the pad.

Strong documentation would be:

Tank sticker
Window sticker
Protecto plate
Car shipper
GM Shipping invoice

Does it have any of these?

There is no way to verify that block as original because the broach marks have been removed.

I doubt it has ALL of the items I listed. Are you able to indentify genuine documentation? Is the seller willing to let you take a picture of them to have them scrutinized? If so, post them here. We will see what's genuine and what's not.

If not, then there is probably a good reason he doesn't want them shown. And if his excuse is he doesn't want to show anyone his VIN then that doesn't fly either. You can block out the VIN on all the paperwork and show it as I can still tell the real deal items without seeing the VIN.

Well? Lets see it.

Am I seeing things, but are those grind marks on the head near the pad?

Looks to me like a "light" decking of the block, way in the past and then the pad unprotected. I believe you can see the decking grinds and then rust pits.
IMHO

Not sure if they are grind marks or not, but I seem to remember similar marks on my L88 heads in that location.

I was just going to ask the same thing.
And yes, if the documentation is so "over strong" - then it needs to be scrutinized even more closely.
Can you establish a living "chain of custody" for this car - that would help.

Need to find out if that strong documentation is genuine.
From NCRS
Shipping Data Report Service

The information consists of the dealer code, dealer zone number, dealer name and dealer address (if available) and the date the car was produced. No other information or any types of documents are available.

The good news is this should allow you to find the original dealer where your Corvette was sold and possibly open the door to finding more information about your Corvette. This service is included for no fee with the Award Confirmation Document. A letter containing the information you requested will be mailed to your NCRS address on record. The cost for this service will be $40.00 USD. Pay by Credit Card or PayPal.

Refunds will be processed if none of the above information is available or provided.

Document Validation Service

NCRS will compare any of your GM documents to the GM records contained in the Shipping Report and if verification can be achieved, will establish the authenticity of your factory documents. Unfortunately, the shipping report does not contain the vehicle options. A letter containing the information you request will be mailed to your NCRS address on record. The cost for this service will be $100.00 USD. Pay by Credit Card or PayPal.
