Default What can I re-use from my old engine?

I bought a '80 project a month ago and will be putting a crate engine in it. I'll need a distributor, carb, water pump, and I assume the brackets for the p/s, alt, and ac will just bolt on so I can re-use that stuff.

It's a California car with the 305. Will the distributor work? Will it need to be modified? I like HEI's but I read something about it being a little different since it's a California model, not sure. The crate engine says it needs a melonized steel gear.

Is my quadrajet big enough for 375-400hp? I kind of doubt it since the 305 had 180hp. I'm sure it could be re-jetted but the cfm's may not be enough???

The 305 starts right up and idles fine. Not sure how it runs under load, I've not gotten out of 1st or reverse.

Yes these parts will work but need to be optmimized for your new engine. If someone can recurve the distributor to have the right timing curve put in and the carburetor main jets need to be richened along with adjusting the secondaries if needed.

GM performance parts sells melonized steel gears, do not forget to buy one. Lou.
