This got me mad.
I am redoing the seats in my 72. It has/had new seat covers that the PO put over original foam. The seats were fine except they had no shape because of the old worn foam. Bought new foam and was redoing the drivers seat. Was going well until I went to pull the head rest part over the back of the seat and it ripped right down the middle of the top. That was because it was already cut for the seat release button. I don't understand why you would use old worn foam.
Just ordered new seat covers, that's $500 in the garbage.

Car guys are cheap some just never learn now you gotta pay for it
Take the guy who spends 50k on a car but wont spend 500 on safe tires, or drops insurance cause "hes not driving it" you know the rest

No they were put on recently. The reason it ripped was because it was cut out for the back release button.

Unfortunately not everyone shares the same standards on a rebuild/restoration.

I doubt the previous owner gave him every detail and receipt from every part he put in.

The moral of the story is, if you are going to do some work on the car get the best parts and do the job right.

You have to replace seat upholstery........... and maybe just the back if you can find the supplier it came from and they’ll sell you just what you need. It’s frustrating but not the end of the world........ and I’m assuming you realized the foam was bad when you bought the car? Point is there are all levels of frustration..... ripped seat upholstery, burnt interior from mice dining on wiring while in winter storage, flooded car from Irma...... I’d take the ripped seat cover...... gladly.

540 vette,
I know exactly what you are referring to...but there is another way to get the cover off and not have this area tear.
I install these covers and I have one method when I install them that I have used or countless seat covers/foams and I tried one day.... to do it another way....just for the heck of it and that way worked also.
I can say that you will want to really make sure your seat foams fit will and the seam where they join is the best it can be and no excessive hard foam from the molds. The reason for this is that this hard foam or distorted/excessive foam can be seen when you get the set cover pulled over the top of the rear seat frame. I was going to start a thread of when I do a set of seats....but seeing how there are others out there....I figured...why waste my time.
Here is a photo showing how I like to see that the lines in the both the set bottom cover and seat back cover line up perfectly when installed. Still more 'tweaking' was done...but at least I know I have the covers positioned correctly.

I did my 71 seats last winter. New bottom and back foam and covers.
The bottoms went well. New foam and covers.
Seat backs not so well. The foam seemed much to large for the covers. I was really concerned that the covers would tear.
So I reused the 71 foam built up with foam from the sewing shop. I think they turned out great. My first seat rehab.
FYI I went from comfort weave to "almost like leather" covers.
