Hello
I have just joined the forum, my names Mike and im from the United Kingdom recently bought my first C3 Corvette, it’s a 1978 25 anniversary model ......it came to the UK early this year from Bowling Green Tennessee , im doing a renovation but came across this unusual tag on the drivers door , if any one has any kind of info regarding this tag I would appreciate it check out the pic , it also has the vin number , all numbers match
I have contacted the corvette museum but unfortunately they have no information on this , hopefully you guys out there may shed some light on this , thanks in advance
regards
Mike.

Yes, an unusual tag for a 1978 Corvette. The build date should be 07/78 and the vin number should be 1Z87LS436223. Your tag shows a build date 09/91 and a 5 instead of an S in the vin.

Default Unusual tag

Thanks guys, the car is just a base model Corvette , one thought is that , it could have been taken to the bowling Green plant for a restoration by the previous owner? but it says “modification” ? again modified to what , I’ve no idea. , I have gutted the car inside and fully sound proofed it ready for the new carpets / dash and seats , it has early original steel wheels with chrome rings and “spinners” instead of the alloys, must admit I prefer it this way, I’ve got hold of all new seals , body will be done next year , ready for the summer here’s a pic , looks pretty sorry for itself at the moment, previous owner must have painted it in a “pearl white” but all the lacquer has lifted
it has a new s/s exahust new calipers all round , all the “smog” equipment has been taken out , also the air con has been taken out brand new carb and new HEI distributor , new starter motor new alternator, the engine looks like it’s been rebuilt with all new seals , gearbox is like new but then it looks like it was just dry stored for some time before I bought it , I do have the last title , so I was thinking of trying to contact them , hopefully for more info
But please if any body knows of this tag , please let me know, thanks again guys , I appreciate any of your messages

regards
Mike

Rookie suggestion: It does refer to renovation also 5/91......maybe a previous owner thought repairs at Bowling Green would help the car hold it's resale value

EDIT: You probably know that you should CHECK ALL FLUIDS AND LEVELS. I picked up a "serviced" vehicle/verified face-to-face with the mechanic that it was ready for use.......

I decided to check the fluid levels, anyway...................

it had NO oil in the engine.

Maybe it would be useful to contact the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. If they don't
know they might be able to give you a contact of someone who can help.

I believe C-P-C was an aftermarket provider who provided removable hard tops for C4 convertibles. I cannot explain how they managed to change the original VIN. "Renovation and Modification" is interesting.

Are we just taking for granted that this tag is genuine and original from Bowling Green?

In GM lingo, C-P-C stood for Chevrolet-Pontiac-Cadillac divisions. The other break down was for B-O-?. That was Buick-Oldsmobile- GMC? Lou.

I think its a made up tag. These blank tags are available, and anyone can type whatever they want on it. The misspelling and the description all cry out FAKE to me.

Hopefully someone will come back to confirm , whateaver it is,...... whether it is “original” and “genuine” that’s the reason I have joined this forum to find out also to make some friends across the “pond” parts are not that easy to locate here in the UK , most of the new items I have bought is from the USA ( quite expensive with customs taking there “cut” ) but as we say
The joys of motoring !!!!!!
in the meantime we still know nothing of this tag but all numbers match , vin tag in screen pillar match and so does the original title from bowling green , so somebody out there must have an idea
thanks again guys
Mike.

Really, !!! What difference would this have made , because I see no sense in faking a tag , like I’ve said earlier all “Tags match screen pillar vin tag and title, plus door tag , personally i think it was partly restored back in 91,..... as you would do a Porsche, Mercedes or any quality vehicle if the owner decided to have the original manufacturer restore the car , or work on it , pretty easy to say Fake, if you know nothing about the origins, but we’ll see

regards
Mike.

Cheers lou, I’m still learning about the corvette, I’ve had many “Muscle cars” over the years , Mustangs Camaro dodge Plymouth, but never a Vette, , stopped with these over thirty years ago , started a family , so had to get myself a “family car “ now it’s paybaxk time, , I restored 1998 Mercedes SL 500 special edition , still have the car and use on a regular basis , also had a little bike I used to ride but this has now gone , it was either that or the wife !!!!
