? What is the best way to R & R drivers door mirror on 1981 C3 ?
Need to replace the drivers door mirror on my wife's 81 Vette. Do I really need to remove the glass to get at the forward bolt from bottom side of mirror or is there a way to lower / tilt glass out of the way of that bolt ?
Great Forum read a lot here but this is my first Question / Post, All help much Appreciated.

That's unfortunately what I had to to do get the mirror off on my 79, which should be the same. I will watch here to see if anyone has a better idea because I need to take mine off again.

I seem to recall there was a post exactly about this. I believe the poster had either enlarged a hole and cut a small section out to allow access. I have to believe one of those methods would be preferable to removing the glass.
Good luck, Bill

I don't know about (newer) models. My '68 has a bolt that holds the top of the front track in place that it can be temp.repositioned so that the optional mirror can be repaired.

First I must Thank You for the input !
I have tried every window adjustment I could find and still the window just stay's enough in the way to keep me from getting to that 2nd nut on the mirror stud.
I will continue to watch here for more suggestions and hopefully I / we will figure it out without removing the window.

1. Removed the window stops from the bottom of the window tracks which enabled lowering the window further.
2. Removed the two felt pads from the side of the door. This enabled moving the window further inward and held it in place by wedging paint stir sticks against the outer door frame.
3. To remove the upper bolt I ground a socket down to make it shorter. I used a 1/4 inch breaker bar to turn the socket. The breaker bar has a thinner profile than a 1/4 inch ratchet, which gave me just enough room to remove the nut. Since it was a breaker bar, it took a while as I could only turn the nut about a third of a turn before removing the socket and repositioning it.

That makes a lot of sense !
I did not remove the felt pads from the door and now thinking about it Im betting your dead on. I'm going to pull it apart again tomorrow morning and give it a try.
Thanks Mark

I thought you could just remove the inner door panels and get to those bolts that way. I think that's how I did it on my 78 when I had it repainted.

Hi LenWoodruff, The window is just enough in the way of the nut on the first stud on bottom of mirror, the other nut is no problem to get at. I will get pic's tomorrow when I tackle this for hopefully the last time but I'm not grumbling about it CUZ it's always an adventure working on the Vette's I believe I enjoy the challenge the Vette's are compared to other car's I have been in on and absolutely the most rewarding when it come's together.
