Default Free car history report for a 1971 Vette

I just purchased a 1971 Corvette Convertible and I would like to know more about previous owners and what work had been done to the car. I am told that a car history will do that and I was wondering if there was a way to get a free history report on my car or atleast a reasonably priced one. Also because the car is a '71 it does not have the 17 vin number and that causes a problem as well. Any help on getting this report would be appreciated. Steve Schmidt

In the wrong section. However, it is hard getting a history report on a 71. At the time some states didn't provide titles. You need to start with the previous owner and see if they know who owned it before they did and so on. Takes a long time and can get expensive. It took me three years to get the owner history on my 71 LS6 back in the early 80s. Add another 35 years to the picture and you have a difficult investigation on your hands. Police can't run VINs unless there is a legal reason to do so and then some states like NY delete all records if the car isn't registered on a regular basis in the state. Found that out when I took my car off the road for a year to restore it. I had a title but NY State deleted all ownership records other than mine once I didn't register it for a year. They had me as the original owner showing one year of ownership on a 10+ year old car with 80K miles on it. You also have to be careful of scam artists as they will take your money and provide a false history Vs a real one.

Try calling the Corvette museum in Bowling Green. First place I'd start. Happy hunting

Hi Steve,
Welcome!
First posts!!
A new old 71 convertible!!!
Very Nice!!
How about posting a couple of photos and a little info about it!

It's difficult to trace owner history on cars as early as your 71.
You really need to start with the people that you bought the car from to get the identification of the people THEY bought the car from.
You can check the C3 Registry to see if your car's VIN might be listed… it's possible.
Did the car come with any paperwork that might indicate the car's original seller… the 'protect-o-plate' or dealer name?
Some states offer title history but MANY don't.
The NCRS offers a service that for many cars can determine when the car was shopped from St.Louis and to what dealership.
Check their web site for how to do that and the cost. Be aware that it's 'possible' they won't be able to identify the dealer.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Happy Thanksgiving!

I had a 1971 Convertible and sold it to a guy in Grapevine, Texas sometime around 1996. Small block, auto, and Ontario Orange.

The museum has no information on earlier cars. They can provide build sheets only for Bowling Green built cars.
