I installed a reproduction lock out cable on my 73 automatic and since doing so the shifter is some what difficult to move from gear to gear. Yesterday I disconnected the cable at the the column and noticed it seems to be about a 1/4" to long. I am considering purchasing a replacement cable from Willcox as pictured below that states correct where as the one I currently have states replacement. I am hoping this resolves the problem. Anyone have a similar experience or can tell me if these cables are different lengths. Also looking at the photo I am not sure how the end without the eyelet is suppose to connect. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi 873,
Here's a photo of the typical connection at the steering column lever.
Note that it's the end of the cable WITHOUT the rubber seal.
The second photo is the cable connection at the transmission reverse lever.
The cable should follow a gentle arc from the steering column lever to the transmission reverse lever.
There should be a small bracket on the upper front bolt of the transmission to guide the cable's arc.
Regards,
Alan

The bracket that guides the cable sheath.
Thanks for the photos Alan. I don't have the bracket shown in your photo that is mounted to transmission. Other than that everything looks identical to your photos. I noticed in the photo for the "correct" cable one end doesn't seem to have an eyelet so I am not sure if the photo is correct. I do know this the shifter is definetly easier to move with this cable disconnected so maybe it's just a bad cable. BTW I plagiarized this photo from the Willcox website so maybe they can advise.
Hi get,
The 'eyelet' is the same at each end of the cable.
It's the rubber seal that determines which end of the cable is attached at the transmission reverse lever.

Alan
You had me wondering about it after reading your thread and noticed my 81 does not have the cable. Here is some interesting reading I found on the Internet to clear things up along with some diagrams. Looks like the transmission lockout cable was used from 69-76 then from 77-82 it was eliminated after the "Finger Inhibitor" System was added. The link brings up a Word document.
