Default Starting Circuit

Can anyone post a simplified graphic of the starting circuit for a 73?
Or a link maybe? I would like to know what part the resistance wire plays in starting and idling/running.
Thanks and Happy Holiday season

Hi I,
I believe:
In the 'start' position of the ignition switch, a full 12 volts is supplied to the points.
But in the 'run' position of the ignition switch, the 'resistance wire' limits the supply to the points to 9-10 (?) volts. The purpose of this drop is to prevent the points from 'burning'.
The length of the resistance wire determines the drop in voltage that occurs. Thus the warning on them.
The 'resistance wire' takes the place of the 'ballast resistor' that earlier cars had.
Regards,
Alan

Original 71 resistance wire.

On the starter, you will find two small terminals.
When you turn the key to start battery voltage is sent through the neutral safety switch and down to the "S" terminal and that turns ON the starter.
While the starter is "ON" it sends battery voltage from the other small terminal up to the (+) positive side of the coil.

When the car starts the coil only gets power from the resistance wire and its function is to limit current.

Great information, thank you both. What year did they go from the 'ballast resistor' to the 'Resistance wire'. Thank you, Mark

Ok, thanks . . . . I'm running an "M&H" single wire electronic ignition. I'm wondering if I need to by-pass this resistance wire. Is it the current that's being limited, or the voltage?

Page 3 of these instructions say NOT to remove the resistor wire.

Is this the unit that you have?

Hi Mark,

"What year did they go from the 'ballast resistor' to the 'Resistance wire'. Thank you, Mark"

I believe that 67 was the last model year in which the ignition systems used a 'ballast resistor' rather than a 'resistance wire'.
Regards,
Alan
