Tires fitment

Probably...but they will look weird on the car. The outer diameter of that tire is too small for the wheel opening and there will be a big gap above the tires and the car will be VERY low to the ground, presenting a ground-clearance issue. A 45 series tire for a 17 or 18" rim would fit better.
Others who have made the move to 45 series tires can chime in with their results.

Hi C,
The 225-45-15 tire is 23" tall.
The original tire for your 77 was a GR70-15 tire and is about 27.5" tall.
All the 4-1/2" difference is in the dimension of the sidewall.
Your car will look like it has roller skate wheels on it.
Regards,
Alan

Chev, this is a great resource that someone on this forum shared some time back which I used to make my own tire purchasing decision.
As Alan mentioned the original tires had a total of 27" diameter, this is a list of all the sizes and aspect ratios that will get you into that 27" ballpark so that the car looks right and has the proper ground clearance.
https://tiresize.com/chart/
You mentioned that you wanted to stick with the original wheels so simply go to the 15" tab up top on that chart and you should be able to see your options.
27" Tire Diameter
205/75R15 = 27.1x8.1R15
215/75R15 = 27.7x8.5R15
225/70R15 = 27.4x8.9R15
255/60R15 = 27x10R15
27X10.5R15
27X9.5R15
27.5X4.5R15
295/55R15 = 27.8X11.6R15
325/50R15 = 27.8x12.8R15

MOST C3 owners think that 60 series tires look best on their cars when using stock rims. Some will use 70 series tires, but mostly because they want similar to stock tire size on their cars. Lower aspect ratio tires only look good on a C3 with larger rims.
