Couldn’t take the original seats anymore in my 70
The foam is 47.5 years old and is foam in name only. The covers are good, but has a small in the center of the drivers seat. The seats are like sitting on ballpark bleachers, and couldn’t take it anymore.
Called Al Knoch up and ordered seat covers and foam to be installed in March. This should make the seats more comfortable and the wife may even ride in it afterwards. I’m hoping we can find a light saddle shade that won’t stand out after the change. Going to try to save the original seat covers as well.

That sounds good....comfortable seats are 50+% of making the car enjoyable.

Sounds like a plan! I too found the stock seats uncomfortable but I went a different route. Please be sure to post pictures when you are doing this/get this done.

I have the Al Knoch foam in my '72. Hate it. The foam is too stiff and too thick. My thighs rub on the steering wheel and I sit too high in the car. This spring I'm tearing that foam out and going with something better from Wilcox.

I lowered the seat in the rear by knocking off the mounting tabs, and cut the floorboard from the firewall and up each side to column height, pried the firewall forward about 3" on the bottom, glassed it in....and then pushed the gas pedal forward by torching/bending the lever...and cut/welded the brake pedal that dropped my knees off the late shark TT wheel I installed....car was born in '72.....
I reused all the OEM foam, with a bit additional added here and there
I took off the seat belt cover for extra clearance.....

I had the seats in my 70 done last year in Carlisle , Al Knoch did them and did a fantanstic job , the new foams made me look much taller on the ride home . Plus they are firm, and beautifull .

I just realized what it was about the OEM seats that I don't care for. Some seats you sit 'in', other seats you sit 'on'. I much prefer the 'in' seats as I feel more comfortable and better able to control things.

I’m not tall, so the extra height won’t be a big deal. There isn’t much way to sit “in” the stock 70 seats, and if I did the 78-82 it would be a different situation. I redid the seats in my 95 and was happy with the results.
My car is mostly original, and trying not to deviate much from that. If I could replace the foam and keep the same covers I would. I currently put a smaller diameter and thicker rimmed steering wheel in, which is 6 screws to swap.

Mine is also pretty stock , when I drove 8 hrs back from Carlisle after my seats were done I said to myself"what a long ride this will be , I was sitting "ON" a hard piece of foam and the back was no better , I guess I'll have to put some miles on it to break them in. But they sure look good.

I had the same prob is AK foam being too hard. I called them up and they said they had a problem with the foam chemicals and shipped me a new set. They are much softer but I haven’t put them in. Not sure why they shipped me the first ones if that was the truth. Not happy I have to do them again but like that they should be softer.

Hi Ron,
i did my seats maybe in August or September. Probably bought the foam in July or August. The old ones were so flat I could feel the springs. The current ones are rather hard and I as a skinny guy can barely get under the steering wheel. I am looking forward to replacing the scrim foam in the covers this time!

Well I'm not too skinny , when I sat in the car the first time I felt like I grew a few inches "that would have made me look skinny" But they are very hard ,I'm thinking after a few summers they will soften up. I hope, mine original were pretty nice but worn out .
