Restoring my 72 LS5 Engine Bay back to original
I am wanting to restore the Engine Bay on my matching numbers 1972 LS5 back to the way it looked the day it left the assembly line in 72. Do any of you have pics of original or restored to original 454 Engine bays let's say 69-72? Any and all angles appreciated.

Hi 72,
There are quite a few nice LS-5 engine compartments in cars owned by members. In fact I think there was a thread devoted to engine compartments in the last year or two.
I'm sure you'll get lots of replies.
Regards,
Alan
Here's one.
Late 70 or 71-72.
And another. 70 (?).
And one more. (Please disregard the arrow.)

My advice...don't get carried away and over do it. They were never perfect when they left the factory. Get a copy of the most recent NCRS Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide. Over-restoring an otherwise original car can negatively impact value and discourage driving. These cars were meant to be enjoyed while driving...not stared at in a garage, being too afraid to use and get dirty.

Are the 72 Valve Covers suppose to be Chrome or Painted?

My 1970 LS-5 detailed engine. Car has the factory original Laguna grey paint and deluxe leather interior. I returned the car's engine compartment and undercarriage finishes to the way I remembered it looking when brand new. I'm 17 again every time that I get behind the steering wheel!

Hi 72C3,
Here are some photos of a LS-6 engine compartment.
This is quite a nicely done compartment that has many things that are typical for LS-5 compartments too.
You might especially note the finish on various parts mounted on the firewall/cowl and both aprons that will apply to you LS-5 car also.
Regards,
Alan

FWIW: good photo reference here. Pics are B&W, but are full of details.

Be careful, do you have original paint valve covers?[/QUOTE]
My Valve Covers are Chrome currently, which I understand is incorrect? My engine is numbers matching, but The previous owner must have changed them out for some bling. 72 are suppose to be Orange correct?
