Default Wiper door fit

morning all,

fitting wiper door... best fit I've managed to achieve so far is below.

Given that I've no real comparators - I've got no idea if this is a reasonable fit or not!

is it usual for the wiper door trim to sit proud of the panel trim? and for the wiper door curve to sit proud of the grille in the centre?

if the answer to either of the above is 'no' - any suggestions to improve?

(and yes - i know i scratched the trim.. i'll fix it when i've got it finished!)

many thanks for your thoughts!

Hi DV,

The wiper grill was often shimmed up in it's center to help it's 'arc' match the 'arcs' of the wiper door and and the hood.

The gaps between the hood, grill, and wiper door appear wider than what would have been typical when the car left St.Louis.

These gaps are really a function of the length of the hood, it's gap at the front, and the position of the wiper door relative to the windshield.

In looking at the photo it appears from the position of the screws in the grill slots that the grill is 'forward' causing the wide gap between the grill and door.
Obviously moving the grill back will help the gap between the grill and door, but increase the gap between the grill and hood.
Can the hood come back at all?
What's the gap like at the front of the hood?

What is the hood you're using?

Regards,
Alan

Offered for comparison.

Having just done the wiper trough clean up I had mine apart. The vent section had little rubber washers raising the vent cowl up slightly that were very brittle. I replaced them with 3 tiny fibre washers to get the correct height.

my 68 resembles that with the trim. I've always had trouble with the trim staying on

Hi DV,
Are the wiper door trim retainers installed properly... they have a top and bottom... and are they all (5?) in place?
Regards,
Alan

I don't think that looks terrible. I think the trim piece between the fender and windshield looks bent down or twisted on the wiper door side. In your second picture, the gaps look pretty uniform. The height difference in the oblique angle photos make the gaps appear larger and non-uniform.

I did not know about the shimming. I'll have to try that when I put mine back together.
