i have welded up, or had the pin welded by buddys several times! the egg shaped rod, i mark the original position of the hole. weld it shut and drill a new hole the same dia. as a hurst bronze shifter bushing. and this works perfect forever. a little grease goes along way on a bronze hurst bushing. plus you end up with the proper clip to retain the rod. i would also find a thin machined wave washer to put between the clip and rod. Update from OP
Since this thread was dug up, and I'm way past the point of putting a new pin in, I'll show you the repair I did by welding new material in and reshaping. It's a nice tight fit now.
