Transmission fluid in a 73 Stingray.
Hi there everyone,
I was hoping that someone may please help a new guy out.
I recently bought a 73 Stingray which was always my dream even as a kid, and absolutely love it.
I have a problem every now and then with the transmission bypassing reverse and slipping into neutral.
Is there anywhere I can check the transmission fluid level?
Many thanks for any assistance,
Dave

The dipstick if automatic trans. Dexron. Manual trans is a fill-level plug on side of trans. Gear oil and little hand pump with hose.

It sometimes slips passed reverse (bypasses) and kicks into neutral instead.
The other gears work fine.

It sounds to me like you are having a problem with the automatic transmission shifter inside the console which has nothing to do with fluid level. You would have to remover the center console cover and look for a worn or broken part in the shifter.

1. maybe the shift lever on the side of the transmission is worn or loose
2. maybe the cable housing hold-down clamp is not tight causing the inner cable to make the shifter bypass reverse sometimes.
