Color change resale penality from original?
Question please and not wishing to start anything, I know it is my Corvette and I could paint it any color (except piinnkkk), so trying to be objective here, I plan to keep it forever but I also know how I really am, until the "next one" comes along.
For an all original 69 L68 TriPower, originally Cortez Silver, 986, how much of a resale hit might be incurred, if I repainted it Burgundy, 988???
Any and all objective advice much appreciated.
And I also believe in the Corvette buyers law of "thirds":
1. 1/3 do not know what the original color was or how to tell or even ask
2. 1/3 do not care and hopefully like red too
3. 1/3 will beat me about the ears and me what a dummy I am for even considering such heresy

If your car has been modified, the paint color will make no difference to a potential buyer....except that "Resale Red" would be best.
If your car is in "factory original" condition, you should paint it the original color, if you want to get full value for your car.
It's as simple as that. If you are selling it as "original condition", it needs to be the original color.

Hi 20m,
I believe that for many of the folks for whom having the car painted in a color other than what the trim tag indicates, the value of the car is decreased by the $$$ amount of the cost required to repaint it in the original color.
Of course some folks will say that it costs $2500 to repaint a car and others will say it costs $12,500.
Regards,
Alan

Alan has it covered above.
Also, don’t forget that regardless of your rule of “thirds”, the third that don’t even know where to look for the original color usually aren’t the buyers for a car like yours. And, the third that like your paint choice are still smart enough to know that you reduced the value, and thereby the asking price, of your car by the amount of a repaint by painting a high-end stock car the wrong color.

If you flip things a lot why invest in a worthy paint job of any color, nice vette paint isnt cheap unless you do it yourself,
But geez lifes a now you see it now you dont proposition that just flies by,
Why settle?
You like a different color for your car then do it,
While a lot of real true comments are made about how this hurts the price and that is taboo,
If you arent wanting the sale to happen at a snap of the fingers someone will pay you the same for a non original color tri power car, might take a little longer might not,
Price is what sells a car,
desirable cars like yours are far more sought after than base models.

If you're keeping the car long term, paint it the color you want. Why paint it for someone else? Heck I wouldn't have even bought mine if it was the original color instead of blue.

“When the next one comes” you will need to sell your car. Your car is more rare than most. I’d keep it original since I assume you will want good money for it. Most willing to pay top dollar would want an original paint L68 especially since it’s Silver and that’s a popular color. If your car was a less desirable color (Green and maybe Burgundy) a repaint to a more popular color might not be such a hit. A color change on an otherwise original car will most likely take longer to find the right buyer.

If it is all original keep the color original. From what you told us "until the next one comes along" why diminish the potential sale price the cost of a paint job as "Alan" and "V/B" suggested?

Hi Doorgunner!
Hope all is good with you too!
Your project continues, Great Work!
BTW, here is the Baton Rouge Corvette Club annual show in Plaquemine you might want to see this Sat. Great Show and all proceeds go to St Jude's. These guys raise more money for St Jude than anybody I know.
Hope to see you soon!
A message from Northshore Corvette Club:

Rule of Thumb, the cost to repaint the car.

If it were just base motor chrome bumper C3 like my '71 (which coincidently was changed from the original Brands Hatch Green to Marlboro Maroon), I'd say go for it without a 2nd thought. However, since your car is much more desirable/collectable than most C3s, I'd weigh color change penalty against your ability to absorb the likely hit to the resale value. If the lower re-sale value isn't a concern to you, burgundy it is!

a 68 tri power car is valuable enough that I would not directly undertake actions that reduce the value. as stated, painting a non original color would reduce the value a considerable amount.

That's a pretty dramatic color change you're contemplating, so it's going to be more expensive to do it right - jambs, engine compartment, etc.
