Default Sidepipes too close to fender?

Headers are not torqued so clearance will decrease still
Installing sidepipes. Passenger pipe, as seen is picture, is close to fender. Do I need to worry about burning the paint? How close are your guys' hooker style headers to your paint?

It's a 71 with a 350. Doug's sidepipes and headers.

Thanks

Final position.... Maybe some kind of heat resistant protection?

Other than fabbing an aluminum "tab" that bolts to the frame and fits between the fiberglass and exhaust which you could paint the same color as the exhaust........(shimming the driver-side motor mount could help, but may create problems on the driver header)

I got nothing else.

That definitely will be trouble with your paint bubbling up. Ask me how I know.

What was your solution? Different headers?

Won't the aluminum rocker panel cover that?

Have you looked at the body mounts, and the relationship between the body and the frame, and compared the position of the right side of the body on the frame, to the position of the left?

Has the body been off the frame? If so, where there shims under the number 1 and/or 2 body mounts, and were they put them back in?

What kind of body mounts do you have, and what kind of shape are they in? 71's originally had solid aluminum pads, that can corrode, wear and even break. The aftermarket poly body mount cushions have been known to crumble. Have the stock solid mounts been replaced with 73-82 rubber mounts? If so, a mount may have collapsed, or the shims may have been left out.

Your door gaps look good, and playing with the body mounts, could screw them up, but I'd still take a look at them.

I have aluminum heads. Would tieing them to the ground and then raising the lift (alternative to jumping on them) make you guys nervous?

Why yes it would....
Unless red hot they're not moving anyways.
Checking body mounts/bushings a good idea then I'd check motor mounts before bending anything. Could also be a bad set.

Do you have a friend with a C3 close by that you could try the header on to see if the car is at fault or the header?

Maybe see if the manufacturer will swap it out for another one?

It was too late for me, damage done. I am repainting the car. I got tired of the sidepipes and had a nice undercar system built. Much happier.

I don’t know if I would try bending them. I would cut and reweld them. I had to with mine to make them fit raised port heads. I didn’t do good enough job down in the area where yours are close and blistered my paint.
