Default 73 L48 Carbons up and dies at 3000 rpm

L48 automatic base 190 hp carbons up a lot (black smoke) Dies at 3000 rpm when attempting to pass a vehicle. Any thoughts where to start? I was thinking: choke not fully open? Float stuck?

Yes, black smoke, you're dumping fuel.

If it's a carburetor issue, have Lars rebuild it. Nobody knows carbs better.

Lars?? Sorry I'm knew to this forum and just getting back into my favorite hobbie, so I'm not familiar with a lot of "Good Guys" yet.... :-)

Thanks for giving directions that go down the right road! Last time I rebuilt a carb was 30+ yrs ago, was on a 327 '63 impala SS. I'd rather enjoy it. Actually just checked on my tools on hand. IHad many cars back in the mid/late 60's (57 chevy, 56 Olds Rocket 88, 58 chevy Impala, 63 supersport) all "trimmed out". Retiring and getting back into it. Never too late, right?!

Agreed. I enjoyed rebuilding my Holley 4160. Easy. No idea about a Q-jet or whatever you may have.

Too rich. Float would be my first guess. Maybe gunked up the plugs too.

Q's also have some casting plugs that leak and other oddball issues. Not as straightforward as Holleys, Carters and even Qjets when they were younger.
