Default Tilt/Telescoping Column

I have a 69 BB coupe with a standard steering column and I am considering installing a tilt/telescoping column. I just feel like the steering wheel is too close and low for me. Those here that have done this conversion, was it worth the time/expense, did it give you the space and comfort you were looking for?

did you consider the cheaper alternative of a 14" flat steering wheel?

On my 69, I did both the conversion from standard column to tilt telescopic and also put on a 14" steering wheel. Made all the difference for me!

The column swap is not all that hard.Make sure the wheels are straight first though. That way when you install the new column you can center the steering wheel properly.

Get a new rag joint also. No reason to put an old one back in!

OEM columns are pricey. You can go aftermarket for a lot less money, but many of them do not have the collapsing feature (in the case of an accident).

There is a steering column guy here on the CF is is a total expert. Will try to dig out his name.

Long ago in a land far far away, I changed the old busdriver style wheel and column for a late shark install.....smaller wheel was a good help, had to fix the column....but some years later I decided to lower my driver seat, and cut the floor/firewall across and up to the column, pry the firewall forward about 3" and glass it all in.....then bent/welded the brake pedal further forward and gas also....dropping my legs off the wheel entirely, 6'5" here so I drive in the James Dean slouch leaning on the console arm rest pad....and I have a 8 ball on my shifter....not cool without one.....

see pix below....

I decided against it but had a 82 tt column for my 69 that already has tt,

The 78 up while a little modding to them makes them fit early cars removes an extra 2",

I will just fix the hazard lamp switch on my tt column and have a nice flat steering wheel out of a 70s trans am to use,
Got that idea from Greenwood,

Tt is pretty much a must have in corvettes for me im 6 foot 2
And built like a sasquatch

I had a Corvette shop do the TT install so can't comment on the particulars of the install. The TT was well worth the expense.

Regard,
Tom

I had a 71 convert with standard (no tilt) column. I'm not a big guy, but found it very uncomfortable to drive. Found and rebuilt a T/T column and it made all the difference. Well worth the time and expense to make the switch.
