As sated and reaffirmed by Vettebuyer I think the whole market is soft and without the original motor it doesn't have a desirable element to any class of buyers.( purist or retros) **** So it price needs to reflect that.***

Thanks Ike ( and everyone else too). If I could drive away for 16K or 17K should I consider it? (if it checks out in person). Here I go being driven by emotion again. In my defense I have searched for several months now this year. Also, we’ve set aside cash money for this purchase, but I really want to spend about $20K for a solid weekend driver. We can do more but $20K would be good.

I’m trying to be patient as many of you have recommended. I can be driven by emotion at times. At the very least I’ll still make the drive to look at the car
Probably everyone has been in your shoes, but the smart thing you did is com here first!!!!!

Back away from the edge!! If you are smart you will eliminate the emotions out of the purchase. Of course not so easy to do. Every car you see will teach you something if you let it even if its not something you like. So examine even the duds carefully and you will learn were and what gets these cars into trouble. Patience and the right car will show up. I think the market is in your favor right now so I think you can be picky!!! Ike

Jstan we are typing at the same time. It depends on what it looks like in person. The theory is to buy as much car as you can afford. So don' buy a $16K car and think you are going to make it a $20K car with the saved $4k. It just doesn't work that way. You will wind up putting in $7-10K to make the $16K into a $20K valued car.

I forgot if you said that this car is local to you, if so check it out, you have nothing to loss but time!! Ike

As others have already said, tread very lightly on this one and do your homework.
There are many other (and better) examples to be found for that kind of money.
Good luck.
Thanks. I’m seeing the “rattle can” look as well.

Ike,
Yes, the car is local. It’s North of Dallas Tx, and we’re in Round Rock. That’s about 200 miles. It’ll be a great day to take the C6 on a cruise. I understand not trying to make a $16K car into more than it is. We’ll go look at it and I’ll let everyone know the results. I’ve been in touch with the seller. He buys and sells performance vehicles. This car he’s had for four years, did the above mentioned repairs to it, and now is ready to sell it. Perhaps I should find a forum member or fellow enthusiast to buy from? Just a thought as was mentioned by someone a few posts above. I’ll put this to rest for now and drive out in the morning. I think I’ll know what to do once I get there and see the car in person. Just a quick note of further concern is the seller originally said “tires are in good shape, no dry rotting or cracking” , but when asked for the DOT , he gave me the 5001 date and said they “...do show signs of cracking/aging if you look closely.” I’m not here to disparage anyone, but that’s concerning to me. Thanks again to all.

Jstan to me the tires are another concern. He is a professional performance vehicle seller yet he thinks 17 year old tires are OK? He is a sale person nothing more looking to sell the car. Lots of red flags!!! Not to say its not worth a certain price. Ike

Looked at 2nd pic and thought, I like the crossmember update... I guess you saw the 25k primer convert in Round Rock? Yellow convert in Gulfport, but that is a hike.

So those tires are 17 years old? Yikes! I guess he hasn't been driving the car much in the past 4 years.

The first thing I noticed was the painted parking brake cable. That's just lazy. Lots more is likely to be covered up by the paint.

It could be a fine car at the right price, if you can negotiate to that, and can be assured there is no rust. As others have said, don't fall for the first one you see, especially if you haven't driven a manual.

I like the way 200 miles is local. 200 miles for me is Norfolk to Boston.

One more concern to add to the pile. The frame is from a 4 speed car. The crossmember isn’t removable.

Crazy. Are you seeing that in one of the new/correct photos I posted? Man, this thing could’ve been really put back together by this shop.

That's a big win, potentially! You said the owner has the original short block? The engine code will tell you if it was originally a manual. Make sure the VIN matches, too!

never (or rarely) buy the first corvette you look at.....most people cant resist and buy the first one, slow down and become a sophisticated buyer it will save you in the long run....

and look closely....that's freeze damage to an engine block.....and the car ran great for many years before I replaced the engine

Tires are shot just looking at the tread, regardless how old they are.
A lot of red flags here based on what he is asking for it.
If this is after 4 years of working on it, what did it look like when he just got it?
Go look at it but leave your checkbook at home so you don’t impulse buy something you will regret tomorrow...

No, I hadn’t seen either of those 2 convertibles, but I haven’t shopped any either. I messed around in the sun for too many years and got skin cancer in 2016. I really have to have a Coupe. Thanks though.

decisions
What can we see here.
The car is far from original.
Manual car with auto trans
Spare wheel carrier missing
Fan cowl broken with a bit missing
Pan looks like a panel beaters night mare.
Cross member front suspension need repair
And a few other things that look odd to me.
I think you can do better for 20K

the primer overpriced one is in round rock. i would go see it to get an idea if there is any kind of real value-enhancement to it, or if seller is dreaming. plus, it will be torn down to where you get to get a deeper view into these car's innards. not saying you would ever want that car, but the more you look at the more you learn and this one is actually local. i have a hard top on my vert and prefer it to the coupe roof.

I see the one you’re talking about in RR on Craigslist. That would be a good one to learn from. Wil do. Thanks.
