Default ‘72 Coupe $20,900 obo “Non #’s Matching” yes or no?

Hello again,

I’m still searching for an early C3. I’m curious if $20,900 obo sounds good for a ‘72 Coupe with a rebuilt 350 and 400 Turbo tranny. Appx 5K miles on the rebuild. 86K miles on the odo. She’s listed as rust free with a good birdcage and frame. The paint is recent (5 yrs ot less) and the interior looks good. She has a new aluminum radiator, new exhaust, new gas tank, windshield, door panels, and seat belts. She “looks” really good. She has no power options that I know of. If she checks out, I’m wanting to make an offer this week.

In a general sense, can a non matching numbers ‘72 Coupe be worth $20K or no? Thanks for any input!

If the paint was done really well and still shows very good I think 18-20K is about right....Downside to this one is Automatic and no A/C.

I have a 72 4spd with A/C and it needs paint bad....I wouldn't take $20,900 for it....But I don't think anyone would offer that anyway.

Good luck and look it over very well preferably with another set of eyes that knows steel bumpers.

Reference Only ( ) When my project car is painted by a local shop I will have nearly $20,000 invested/including the purchase price.....and "nothing matches".

So......it depends whether someone is flipping the car to make a profit.....or whether they actually "went through the car from bumper to bumper".

No A/c and auto are downsides, along with the missing original engine, but is looks pretty good. If it checks out, I think $18k would be a good price and &19k would be reasonable.

The A/C compressor is missing. The seat cushions look flat in the picture, could need replaced, Make sure it dosen't need suspension work. For $20,900 all this should have been done in my opinion.

Agree with CA, but there are a lot of variables here as the condition of the car, the location, paint etc. But without the original motor non AC and auto I think that $18k is the max. I have been following the market closely and a lot of these cars are not selling. So it depends on how serious the seller is.

What drives me nuts are ads with low resolution pictures.
In this day and age there is no excuse for not providing clear, crisp pictures when selling a car. Even the cheapest cell phones can take decent pics.

The resolution on these pics are fuzzy enough to make most any car look good.
The car may be gorgeous or may be a train wreck, you really can’t see well enough in the pics provided.
Being cynical by nature, I tend to think someone is trying to hide something with pics like these.
Just my .02 but I’d ask for better shots or look at it in person.

You can do better. I recently purchased a red '71 convertible with original engine and 4-speed, PS, PW, Tilt Wheel and AC for less. I recently saw a 1969 LeMans blue side-pipe coupe with original 350 hp engine sell for $20. I have helped people find cars and run across really nice cars for decent prices.

x2 on suspension, dont think the non original motor means + or - on value in this case.
Its a low option 350 auto. Dont let the guy telll you its "rare" by having less going for it thus asking more $.

As others said crawl underneath it, ask questions then drive it at varying speeds/condition. 20k is a fair bit so you dont want to have to spend thousands on it. Long time owners are good to buy from they usually know a lot about the car, flippers/dealers who knows.

For that price all the extra parts should be there. I would keep looking.

Great looking car.
If it's as clean and straight as it looks, it would be $20K+ here in SoCal. That doesn't sound too high for a great looking Corvette to me. The missing/non-working A/C could certainly be used as a bargaining chip. If you could own it at $18K as is, I don't think you'd get hurt. Good luck and let us know which way this goes for you.

I paid $18,000 for my 72. It has a 5 foot paint job had a 327, but was an original BB car, had A/C and auto. It was a nice driver. Interior and paint looked pretty good.

Now it has no A/C, 502 and a 4 speed M-22. I replaced everything in the interior I felt needed replacing and I will paint the car soon. Cleaned the frame and replaced everything that could be removed. New front and rear suspension, brake and fuel lines. But I do this to every old vette I get.

Roger that. I’m working on getting more info. We plan to go look at it tomorrow morning. (Can’t go today). I believe he has the original short block and heads, but no A/C compressor. I don’t know the condition of the original engine block and heads or if he’s including those in the sale. I couldn’t get those home even if they’re included. I’ll update soon. Thanks again for all the feedback.

I don't think that is too bad for a price , have a good look at it, and if you like it get it , it's old and will need some love , numbers matching or not who gives a **** , if you like it get it .
I bought a 1970 , paid way less but it needed 4k in parts and stuff, I new that but I wanted the car , I fixed it and I'm happy with it .
Mine is original paint , it's a 5 foot car also, I guess they call it "petina" .
Plus option are a non factor , these cars are nice.
I have no A/C,no powerbrakes, no tilt/teles. a shitty AM/FM radio. But damn I look good driving it. Ron

At 20k there are many choices. And, at 17, 1000 to ship it and 500 to go see it (after MANY pics and somebody local to it inspecting it) may be a better way to go. And there is no law says you have to buy this week, or this summer. More come up for sale, and more worth 25 get prices dropped cuz they aren't selling and sellers wife wants a new kitchen. Take your time.
