The answer to that is a personal choice. You have to determine how you feel since you'll be the owner. It's a nice looking car, but calling it a tribute of some type is thin. It's a used Corvette with a replacement engine.

Thanks guys. I always get lots of good advice here. Ronardt-I’m about 242 miles from this one. That’s not a bad “day trip” on a good day. The car is down near the Texas/Mexico border. I might be able to make the drive as another learning experience. But yes, as a manual tranny car, I’m out of the running on this one. It sure does “look” good from the limited photos posted.

Maybe someone here could get this one for a good price. Thanks everyone!

My preference is a numbers matching survivor, but I have no problem with a well done “tribute.” Sometimes the original is so rare and valuable that you can’t drive them without being scared that they will be damaged. In that case, a tribute makes sense.

What I don’t like is the use of sales buzz words like restored, barn find, patina, clone, tribute when they are used to hype a poorly executed car. Hard to tell the quality of this car from the photos provided. Hard to believe that it is a quality build at that price. No power accessories, but that’s not necessarily a negative for some. If that car was a quality restoration, I’d think it would be priced at least $10k higher.

I sometimes scratch my head, when I read some comments, like what is being said both on this discussion, as well as many others. In the case of C-3 Corvettes, the absolute newest one on the planet, is still 36 years old!! If a car has been driven for 36 years, stuff is going to wear out and get replaced. Secondly, "back in the day", before all the crash and pollution regulations were in place, and when cars were street raced (I know, I was there), a LOT of parts were changed out, to make the cars faster. And yes, engine swaps on a Saturday morning weren't all that uncommon.

Yes, I fully well realize that a "survivor" has a place in the car collecting world, but with every day that goes by, the chances of a "survivor" carrying on, with it's OE water pump, it's OE plugs and points, it's OE tires, etc, etc, gets slimmer and slimmer.

If I were looking at a C-3, I'd be FAR more concerned about the condition of the frame and birdcage...…

If you have the time and the inclination, Corvettes at Carlisle in Pennsylvania is only a coupla months away (late August). The car corral there usually has plenty of C3's in all configurations. It might be well worth your time to fly out east to check it out. It's a 3-day event, and you might need all 3 days to see everything!

Richard is dead on with this one....This is a scam, seen many adds like this one back in my hunting days.....Don't send any money to hold it till you can see it or whatever excuse they try to feed you.

Even as a tribute this car would still bring 40 plus all day long at auction.

Run Forest run...

I love when people call coupes convertibles. Hey, the roof panels come off, right? The thing I like least about this car is the creative write-up. " LS-6 is super rare car!!! (This fake is a fake LS5, BTW)..." Take the seller out of the equation and this is a very nice car.

No it wouldn't. You can buy nice coupes born with big blocks in them for that kind of money. The television auctions are far from real world if that is what you are basing this on.

This looks like a nice car, but I don't like the LS6 hype.

Hi, The original car posted is almost assuredly a scam.

The pictures of the car are from a dealer in Florida that sells online and posts a ton of pictures. They've been cropped to hide the ballpark in the background.

These guys grab those pictures, and then post the car for sale in an area that's difficult to get to. If you or a friend lives in San Antonio or surrounding area, would be easy to go look. Guessing roughly an hour outside of town.

Good eye! A quick search for where the Detroit Tigers play in Spring Training show the photos were taken at Publix Field in Lakeland, FL.

What is the endgame of a scam like this? Find an overseas buyer, pocket the deposit, and vanish? I had no idea this was a thing.

Across the street neighbor just bought an 06 Murano on craigslist for 1000 bucks. On Ft Lee in Virginia, so you couldn't get on post. She moneygrammed them 1000 bucks. Now, they said, you need to send 1000 for shipping. She did. Now, you gotta send 1000 refundable shipping deposit. At that point, she came across the street and asked me... 17 year old girl. You put crap like this out there enough times and places, you will get suckers to bite. I just looked at that ad. Email seller. No phone number. And that is definitely the ball park in bikespace's post. I bought my 75 vert online sight-unseen. Copart. 2500 plus shipping. at least with Copart you get some ironclad guarantees. guaranteed to get an effed-up car. and guaranteed to get an effed-up title to match...

In the case of that ad car seems more trying to hype the car up for better sales, cheesy? Perhaps to some but they are being honest its not the real deal,

Pricing?
Copies tributes ect in my way of thinking should be priced example to example,

An excellent condition 69 ZL1 tribute will command tall dollars, the engine is expensive, a well made copy wont be cheap,

My 69 road racer inspired build, L88 hood and flares, most wont want it, not nice enough, too much patina, chessy all iron 454 with L88 console tag,
Might fetch what any mediocre 69 convertible would fetch,

I dont care what lable is placed on what they are fakes, like i cant afford the original starry night so i have a print, i cant afford to buy say greenwoods old racer so i make my version,
But im not walter mitty with day dreams of lapping daytona at 190mph, even on a closed track event, lol,
I like my 69 as i like my Van Gogh print,

I dont see my car as something its not, too many tribute builders do, it can be recognized by the endless chest thumping for attention and "hey, look at me, my build" cry.

I doubt purists into originality and numbers will give much respect to the tribute cars,
I would have zero respect for a flipper out right lying that some fake is the real deal,

I guess bottom line if a buyer doesnt care about the orginal mumbers stuff and the price is right on a modded car they can make great fun cars....

Edit:
Blasphemy?...um no, these are cars not holy relics

They are machines intended to be used.

I have seen SO many scams on Craigslist, but this would be a first for me on Auto Trader. The pictures sure look like they are taken in Florida and the car is located in a very remote border town in South Texas. Caution to anyone looking at this post. Imagine what could happen if someone went to buy this car with cash money.....? Yes, there are many red flags with this car listing.

Its pretty simple really. Ask the seller for a unique picture, like 'can you send me a pic of the back of the differential or 'a picture looking at the suspension' or whatever you need to justify your request. If they send you a pic, keep talking to them and get a phone number. If they dont, but come back asking you for shipping info, banking info or any kind of sob story, then just delete the emails, drink a beer and keep searching.

I found a nice motorcycle on a local CL add a while back. Price was too good to be true. The picture had palm trees in the background......I live in Syracuse. I contacted the seller and immediately got the 'our son died in combat' and 'please set up an ebay shipping account right away and we will discount the price even further'. Now, I didnt want to offend a possible Gold star mother, so I polity mentioned I was alos in the service and I empathized with her loss. I asked where the motorcycle was currently located..(all the while 'she' was asking for shipping details, account numbers and contact info). She gave me the address of a storage facility...which just happened to be a boarded up up gas station thats been closed since 2006. Thanks Google.....

DO your homework. The internet is your friend. I hope for your sake this is a legit sale.

If a scam, every question, especially requests to see it in person, will be met with a song and dance. Unless you see the car AND the title, don,t even think about it.

Scottd, derekderek...roger that. Thank you and everyone. I’ve “requested more info” and will seek specifics. I’ll follow up here with any results.

Ignore any response that comes back other than, "Here's some recent pictures. Have the CLEAR title in hand."

The clear title is a huge problem with used cars in general, people don't transfer them, etc. It can be a huge pain in the *** even if everything is on the up and up. Insist on the clear title or no sale, whether it's this car or any other.

Hello again, I’m still searching for a C3. I value everyone’s opinions here and I appreciate the input on my many inquiries here lately. I’m curious what the feelings here are concerning “tribute” cars, and specifically the one listed above. ( I think a tribute used to be called a clone). Just for info, I’m primarily looking for a Base Coupe ‘70,’71, or ‘72 with an automatic transmission. Right now Texas or nearby states is best. For me, a NOM low option car is fine. I’m really not too picky. Just landing a restored to semi-restored C3 is going to be a dream come true. My hope is to spend $20-25K, but I’m willing to go as high as $29,999.

So, are tribute cars the worst things ever, the best bang for your buck, or somewhere in the middle?

Thanks!
Jstan
That 71 looks to be a very nice car with a great price. Drive and inspect it, if it passes muster buy it. And if you do buy it. Change that rubber fuel line ASAP !
