Melted a rear tail light lens on my '81??
Has anybody else had this problem? This spring when I pulled the cover off my car and began washing it I noticed my right rear, outermost tail light lens melted till it looks like Caesar's nose and bubbled the paint in the lens recess and a few inches down the bumper. I've included a photo for reference.
The really weird part is that the running light, turn signal light and brake light bulbs all still function normally!!! If you have any idea what might have caused this please let me know.
Thanks,

PS also need to fix my frozen tach. I read an article that it most likely is a bad circuit board. I replaced that with no luck.

most likely wrong bulb or the bright filament is on with tail lights. supposed to be blinker or brakes. not on all the time...

That could have been a shorted out bulb socket but since you say that it works correctly, than that could also be that corner was subjected to some external heat. I don't think that may have been caused by a bulb. How was the car stored and was it exposed to any radiated heat sorce. Even the paint outside the tailight pocket is blistered. A tailight would literally have to be on fire to cause that. I would bet it was not a lighting problem, some outside condition caused that.

That socket experienced a dead-short for some reason. Could be some quirk of corrosion; could be that the wrong bulb was installed...or the right bulb was installed incorrectly.
Whatever the reason, check that socket out very carefully. You might have gotten lucky that the rear end of the car didn't get hot enough to actually ignite.
