Has anyone done a flat black mid section on the hood? I was thinking maybe a flat black on the raised area on a gloss black car.. google can't find me any pics

I was just thinking... the 1982 Collector Edition, Hood Fader Decal looks to be what i'm thinking.. except in a little more pronounced flat black.. Looks like there are some graphics companies doing the '82 hood fade decal, I wonder if they would do it like i'm wanting

I have never seen it in person. The pictures of flat black cars look pretty impressive. i think it all depends on the quality of the application. Like out of the can not so good, using the good stuff from a hvlp gun much better results. Look at www.dipyourcar.com
I think there are places mow that specialize in it.

Any idea how it reacts if you get wax on it? Would it turn chalky white like the old black trim used to?

It worked well on the Hi Perf Mopars back in the day, it would probably look pretty sharp on a black '80 Corvette.
My buddy back in high school had a '69 Roadrunner, gloss black with the flat black inserts. Best looking car around for miles.

You mean like in my avatar? That is actually a semi-gloss black vinyl stripe I put on myself about 6 years ago. At a "Super Chevy" show some years ago, a judge told me he was going to put me in a "Street" class, because of the painted stripe. I told him it was tape and he actually argued with me...until I showed him a little edge pulled up in an normally non-visible area.

The stripe is on the hood and the tail section, and runs all the way down on both ends. It is NOT on the top. I protect it with Nu-Vinyl every few months and it has never gotten hard, cracked or peeled...even on the hood.

It was pretty common back in the day for a sports car to have a matte black hood or stripes on the hood and it looked pretty sharp. When you say "flat" black, this was not what they used, the matte black isn't quite as dull and is somewhere between a semi-gloss and flat colour as in the cars Greg posted. In my opinion (and apparently the opinion of the car designers back in the day), flat black wouldn't look as nice but a matte black stripe would probably look pretty good on a late C3.

Did you put it on yourself? I had a Challenger, took one look at the huge piece of vinyl for the hood and had some guys come out who knew what they were doing to squeegee it on.

I was going to try the plastic coat on my hood but decided to experiment with it first. Used the riding mower as a test bed. Taped it off and sprayed and was happy with the finish until I pulled the tape up and the edges were not clean. I used the high end tape and was very disappointed with end result. Tried a couple of other samples, with different tape products, with the same results. Going with a vinyl wrap.
