I recently changed the oil and filter on my 1972 corvette with the 454 engine. 5 quarts were put in per the manual. When I got home and checked the oil level it was way above the full mark. I waited an hour and rechecked with the same result. So I took it back to where the oil was changed and was told that the reading on the dipstick is not always accurate and as long as the correct number of quarts was put in there was nothing to worry about. I have never heard of this. So I went to another mechanic and had one quart drained. This put the level on the dipstick right in the middle between add and full. I added back in enough in enough oil, about 1/2 quart, to get it right to the full mark. Oil pressure is normal and I know the dipstick is the correct one as I am the original owner of the car. I have never noticed this problem before. Anybody have any ideas why the reading would have been so far off? Thanks

Either they didn't completely drain it or put in more than 5 qts. Or maybe they used the teeny tiny filter.

GM 454 oil change refill w/filter requires 5.5 quarts. Maybe they didn't change the filter?

maybe they used a small filter or simply added too much oil by mistake.

I did think they may not have drained it completely as this makes the most sense but have no way of knowing. I bring my own oil as the place that does the change does not stock any oil with zinc and phosphorous. As for the filter they charged me and used the same part number that they always do. Thanks for the response.

what make and part# is the filter?

The part number on the invoice is 25324052. I don't know the brand but it was done in the service department of a Chevy dealer and they had it in stock. They referred to it as a filter for a 454. Thanks for the reply.

it is hard not to drain it incomplety to account for a quart of oil....even a half quart of oil.....i mean if its flat on alift and oil is coming out the bottom it wants to come out....once the oil flow is down to a trickle it only accounts for ounces.....i bet he lost count of what he put in

I just did and that sure looks like the problem. Any ideas on where I can get a full size filter? I've looked online and they are hard to find. Or if they are no longer available I think I'll start having them put in the first 4 quarts and I'll add the 5th as needed. Thanks for the information.

Go on line to NAPA Auto parts.
I believe they still sell the long OEM style filter.
If you don't see it on line call a store and they can help you out.
I purchased one for my boat not to long ago so you might need to get a marine filter for a Merc Cruiser at your local boat shop.
There is no difference in the marine (Merc Cruiser) and street Chevrolet filters.

O'Reilly and NAPA both sell Wix and NAPA 1 quart filters. Bosch and Mobil 1 also make them. Just look up an early '70's pickup.
