you have the wrong sending unit in the tank. wrong resistance.
assuming you have verified the gauge is not mechanically getting stuck.

Checking the resistance is hard to do with the sending unit in the tank and the connections are hard, if not impossible, to access with the tank mounted. You're going to have to drop the tank no matter what the problem is. First thing I'd check after dropping the tank is to ensure that the float is able to move freely throughout it's arc. The 82's came with the pump in the tank so you might have to change the gauge and the sending unit. I'm not sure what the resistance is, but maybe this will help http://repairs.willcoxcorvette.com/w...it-testing.pdf

Fuel pump on engine. No longer Crossfire efi? Somebody been in that tank. Odds are they did something wrong...

remove the wire from the tank and ground it, it should peg the gauge all the way full. if it does then the problem is in your sender in your tank, too much resistance for a given level of gas.
if not then you have too much resistance in your wire or connections. disconnect connections, sand them off with fine sandpaper, then reconnect, see if it solves the problem.
