C3 Removal of console cover
Since the console cover plate does not clear the shifter **** (1970 AUTO), does the **** screw off or do you have to disconnect the shifter entirely?

The **** will unscrew (CCW). If you have an auto trans, the chrome 'lock' know will unscrew first; then the shift **** will unscrew to leave just the shifter shaft.

As was mentioned make sure you take the chrome lock off first, unscrew the ball.. then make sure you get under with a wrench and take off the back plate to the shifter and slid off the plastic clip that moves the indicator arrow. In order to be able to lift it up over the shifter you will likely have to disconnect the wires for the AC, blower and lighter. Then you can just slide it up. If you have power windows those can stay on as you tilt it up and back.
