Default Rear Trunk Vibration/Rattle

Sorry if this has been discussed but I've searched and search and can't find any specific post on this... Anyway, I recently bought a 77 and when starting from a stop and slow rolling at about 15-20mph or so there is a heavy vibration and rattling inside the cockpit in the trunk area. It's like the fiberglass is rattling. Once i get above 20mph or so, the rattle stops. The car has a rear luggage rack and I'm not sure if that's a factor. There is nothing in the storage bins or sitting loose in the back. Like I said, it sounds like the fiberglass sort of rattle.

I totally understand this is a 40yr old car and it's going to be somewhat noisy, but I'd like to reduce it if possible. Has anyone had a similar experience and have suggestions to how stop or quiet it down? I thought of Dynomat but I'm not sure that will work and I'd hate to spend the money if that's not really a solution. I'm going to try to stuff comforters or something to in the trunk area to see if I can put slight pressure on the fiberglass walls to see if that reduces it. TIA!

I am sure you know this, there are inserts in the cargo compartments. did you remove them and confirm there is nothing rattling around under them?

My 78 does this as well. I have not identified the vibration sourse as yet (Its only been 3 years and I will get around to it one day.) but I have thought that it could be either:
- My mufflers are very close to the spare tyre tub and they could contact with high vibrations in the exhaust.
- The roll out lungage cover tube vibrating. Thinking of this though your 77 doesnt have this option so ignore this and my 78 model doesnt have a luggage rack so I dont think its there either.

I will try to put some rubber block wedges between my mufflers and the spare tyre tub and see if that fixes the problem.
If you find the solution please update your thread so I can fix my car as well.

Do you mean the 3 stowage compartments? I'll check those.

Will do. I've been the only one to drive it so it's hard to troubleshoot while driving. I'm going to let someone else drive it and see if I can wiggle my way back there to at least see where and which side it's coming from. Sometimes it sounds like it's high (like the luggage rack is causing the fiberglass to vibrate), sometimes it sounds low, sometimes left, sometimes right... LOL.

I chased a vibration that ended up being the fuel door. Try driving with the fuel door open or stick a rag between the fuel door/body so it can't close all of the way and see if the noise goes away. If so, a little dab of clear silicon in the right spot will eliminate vibration/noise.

I tried a bit of rubber under the fuel door and the rattle/vibration is gone. Thanks Revi for the suggestion.
