Default Key to a low-level mystery

I've put 85 miles on my '70 since I bought it. In the meantime, I've been doing some things to it, which have required me to get under the car. At one point, I noticed that the front license plate bracket was wrapped with black electrical tape, but never thought anything of it. I also saw that the end of the tape wasn't sticking very well, so I just kind of pressed it back into place and moved on to whatever I was doing.

I took the picture below over the weekend, and if you zoom in, you can just see the tape hanging, below the second zero in the license plate.

It began to unravel a bit more, so much so that my wife actually noticed it hanging and asked what it was. I told her it was a piece of tape, tucked it back up, momentarily asked myself why it might be there, and again moved on to whatever we were doing or talking about.

This morning, I was checking something under the car and the tape caught my eye. I looked more closely and thought, maybe it's concealing some damage or defect?? Why would it be there?

Maybe it was there to hold a wire to a light for the plate....Or those required...?

Sorry Brian, I had to step away for a bit. No lights for the front plates required. I know--the fact that it was electrical tape is a little confusing. Nothing electrical going on here at all.

And for everyone else reading this, give it some thought as to what you might think it could be. (I've already figured it out.)

That bottom brace isn’t factory. Too bad they drilled a hole in the body to add it.

I was also going to guess about a spare key. And then you posted the answer. Pretty good hiding place too. Well maybe not now since we all know about it.
