Obviously I was not there on the assembly line to see if thy used a jig to drill the holes to keep it in a relatively same area. But all of those I have seen are basically in the same area and at the same angle but I never take out my digital caliper to measure them.

Well I looked at a 1968, 1970, 2-1973's and an 1980 quickly and all of them were the same but the 1968 tag was not the same and I know it is factory correct.
The tag for the 1968 was higher and angled a bit and the top corners of the tag were slightly bent to where they were hitting the curves in the fiberglass in that area at the top.
All of the others were basically centered between the two large rivets and the bottom edge of the tag was very slightly above the straight bottom edge of the fiberglass in that area.

I do not know the answer to this question --
But, I highly suspect that there was a jig for drilling those rivet holes, and each year COULD have been different. Certainly, that kind of jig would have a LONG life. But, the position could change if the jig was re-made OR if it was new for each model year. Not a surprise that the 1968 tag position might be a bit different. The first year of production is somewhat of a "test run".

This photo above and those that I can provide...if needed ...shows that there was NO PRECISE position for this tag.

You could post them here or PM me whatever is better. I’m sure others may like to see as well.

I will do that tomorrow. From what I can see GM did not worry about its position due to variances in them.
