Why would they put the fake trim tag on before painting?

My guess would be that a prior owner just wanted to paint the car black, not to be deceitful, but just because he liked black and didn't car about originality and the green trim tag. Then someone buys the car and just figures, 'Hey, I know a good way to jack up the value, I'll just switch the trim tag!". Hopefully, the current owner is the culprit and still has the original trim tag in his possession and some smooth buyer offers him a fair price for the car with the condition he hands over the green tag. Unfortunately, the tank sticker paid the price...

Here is the response from the seller of the car to my comments. Good to see he is a stand up guy!
@Survivor69 – after reviewing your original comments, I took a deeper look at the trim tag and quite honestly a deeper look at the car all around. I confirmed that there does appear to be a visible metallic green area on the bottom side of the trim tag, which was enough evidence to warrant bringing in a professional. We called in a third-party paint and body/restoration specialist this morning to look at the car. After removing several trim pieces we have confirmed your original theory – this car appears to have been British Green when new. We found several small areas (inside door panel, inside rear cowl, etc) where small remnants of the original metallic green paint was visible. Upon this discovery, we contacted the last two owners of the car (over 30 years of combined ownership) and both previous owners verified that the car was not only black at their time of purchase and sale but that they both also believed it to be an original Tuxedo Black car. This means that the car must have had a color change over 30 years ago. I pride myself in full disclosure and fully believe in karma – that being said we have requested that our auction manager here at BaT revise this listing to state what we have recently discovered and now believe to be true. I want to sincerely thank all of the above mentioned posters for bringing this error to our attention along with sincerely apologize to any perspective buyer for incorrect information regarding the car’s history. Observation and input from members like you guys are a big part of what makes this community so great and I am glad this was brought to our attention before it became any further issue.

Wow interesting response!! So do we remove the fake trim tag? Ingrave it as repro? I commend the seller for his actions but unless something is done the issue will simple come up again in the future and the new seller may not be as honest!!!

So I came across this nice Tuxedo Black 69 convertible on craigslist:
https://annapolis.craigslist.org/cto...788743259.html
But the trim tag looked like a repo so I googled the vin:

It's just another big reason why real, factory black 900 code cars with the original trim tag are at a premium.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, when I looked for a real code 900 car I spent 2 years and lots of travel doing it. Most of the black cars I looked at were originally Fathom Green (I’m sure the guy above’s car was Fathom Green, too) and I checked each car for real trim tags and evidence of other colors.
People have been faking numbers on engines and trim colors for as long as I’ve been in this hobby and most (all?) of those cars are worth significantly more than what a triple black ‘69 is. If you want a real car based on color, it’s up to you as a buyer to verify it just as if you were buying a red/red ‘67 tripower. It’s not reasonable to expect to remove the fake trim tags or expose all the other fake cars out there.
