Default headlamps for 1969

Hi
Australian vet owner here so local auto part stores are a bit lacking in knowledge, question for the headlamps do you need seperate hi beam (x2) and low beam (x2) or can you use the hi and low beam bulbs (x4) (ie the part i can get here is ROUND SEALED BEAM HIGH/LOW (146mm (5 3/4"), 12 volt, 60/37.5 watts, High beam & Low beam)
Thanks bardell686@yahoo.com.au NOTE the shippimg costs from the USA to Australia is about $140!! so want to get local

Your car does require two low and two hi beam bulbs. Welcome to the forum.
look for Phillips H5001 for hi-beam and H5006 for lo-beam.

You have to run two of each, one hi and one low. The cups are different and the bulbs have bumps in them that will only fit the correct cups. You can't run four of the same bulb.

I just realized that I gave him the part number for 1972 bulbs. They might not fit his 69. Maybe Willcox can help with that.

The low beam lamps are really HI/LO [combination] bulbs; the high beam lamps are only HI bulbs. With LO beams, only the two LO lamps are lit. When HI is selected, all four lamps are on and the LO bulbs have both the HI and LO filaments lit.

So, to have it configured as from the factory, low beam lamp positions get HI/LO beam bulbs and high beam lamp positions get HI beam [only] bulbs.

I have H4 globes in all 4 but only use the high beams in one pair using ultra whites. The difference in night vision is amazing. The sealed beams gave off a yellowish light and looked odd next to the H4's so changed them out, all run through relays to save the headlight switch and also to eliminate the built in circuit breaker from putting me in stealth mode!!!!!

Here in Aus we have to alter the buckets to suit Australian lamps, the lights point towards the left not right so USA headlights are no good. A couple of hacksaw cuts and a pair of pointy nose pliers to put new notches in does the trick.

IF you want to use the fiberoptics- you'll need the correct bulb with the nipple for the fiberoptic...

If you upgrade to the replaceable bulb type- you can modify the housing to access the fiber optic cable. I just drilled a hole to accept the fiberoptic and used the rubber bulb cover to secure it- a dab of silicone would also work.

Call me naive, but can 't you just adjust the screws to compensate for the right hand drive?

What I'm confused about and someone please correct me if I'm wrong.... I'm just asking because I'm sure this question will come up again.

The lamps have plenty of adjustment and for us... we have a painted line on the floor, we have painted marks on the wall. So we put the car on the painted mark, then adjust the screws so that the lamps are properly adjusted with the lines on the wall...

But honestly I don't think the marks are US or down-under marks.... I believe they are centered per the the roadway not right or left hand drive roads.. I'll have to take a look at this on Monday. Oddly enough we have a car we will be adjusting on Tuesday in the shop so I'll get to review this.

Richard,

We had the nippled lamps up until a few months ago... sadly... the supplier we were using didn't specify the nippled lamps when they made another run... ( Oh... a nippled lamp can be used on any car) and they are all now without.

Until we contacted them they were not aware of the fact that they didn't have the nipples.. So hopefully when they get new stock they'll have them again but for now... if you find a lamp with a nipple with a fiber optic car.... buy them.. no one makes one with that nipple right now.

yes can use the screws to adjust the light direction, the hacksaw might be to adjust the headlamp fixture so that the australiam spec lamps fit, but last time i changed lamps they went straight in ( maybe the car had previously been altered but i don't think so)

To get an American car through our Government Department of Transport inspection process so it can be driven on the public roads , we have to have Australian standard (head) Light fixtures . So all I do is buy those same lights local ,they fit a lot of Australian cars back in those same years . They sometimes have different markings on the glass ,most don't even have anything on the glass ! but they are new and you keep the sales receipt !! They mount straight in , I have done a few C3 and a C4 and never had to modify anything .
What the fuss is about is the Original bulbs are supposed to dip to the right (from High beam to low beam ) and are apparently a hazard . Personally I cant tell , but that's what you have to go through to get it done . The plus is it doesn't hurt to renew those usually old and dull lights anyway.

Here's the cut-off for USA bulbs-

So if you are driving on the wrong side of the road - "down under"- I see where it could be in the eyes of the oncoming driver- this is what you'd want-
