Default 78 Vette Half Shaft/Drive Shaft Finish

I am going to replace my half shaft and drive shaft u joints in my 78 Vette and want to clean them up, the question is what should the finish be? Should I sand them back to bare metal and clear them or is there a paint that would give the protection and close to the original finish?

Thanks

If you dont intend to do NCRS judging, paint them.

No Judging? "Cast Blast" aerosol paint.

Well, I went overboard cause it's a long winter here in Michigan. I sanded and sanded and sanded then buffed to a shine. Then clear coated. No NCRS, just like the detail work.

Thanks All! I appreciate the info.

Duke, are those GM part numbers decals on your half shafts?

Looks good, I have one on my main drive shaft but the half shafts.

Unfortunately I will have to remove the one decal to restore my drive shaft.

Do you save it and in fact, scan it (is possible) and post here or send the image to me. Would like to see it.

Here is a picture of the decal off the main drive shaft.
I did get the decal off but in a couple of pieces, the half shafts didn't have decals must of fallen off over the years.

What's the last four digits of your VIN? Four-speed? Mileage?

for fun..the 78 in this thread was white label..wondering if my 79 4sp is clear label? Different number too? i thought they were same..
mine is like scotch tape with black letters...i thought it was silver label but appears the silver is protected base metal that flaked away..man these things rust..you can kinda see after clear where the label protected it..just curious i like the detail..

Clear?

Clever. Someone mentioned that you might have OCD. I think not....more like CDO -- because your acronym must be in alphabetic order!
