Painted my 69 today
Well after two months of stripping , bodywork , gelcoat , primer , sanding , sanding, sanding, the day finally arrived , and I painted my 69 roadster today, just want to thank everyone on here , including DUB for all the great advise along the way, this is the first car I have ever painted , and honestly it turned out amazing. After it is wetsanded and polished , it is going to be incredible. I painted it in the exact factory 988 burgundy metallic, it has very fine metal flake so I opted to leave all the panels off the car while painting, other than the headlight doors. I painted the underside of the deck lid, the hood lip , inner doors and door jams with the burgundy base and then satin clearcoat, to replicate the factory lacquer, I think it looks really good, and I do plan to have the car judged so I thought I would go that route. Wet sand and polish next week , then blackout on the engine compartment etc, and on to assembly.

Looks excellent!! Nice work, and I appreciate the hours of prep. I am working on my '70 right now and should be spraying it in a month or two. Collecting everything I need in the meantime. Looks like you put down a sealer first, then base and clear? Whose paint did you use? How long was the entire process once you got settled in the booth? How many coats of each? Do you have your own gun? What did you spray with and do you recall your pressures and any specifics? Thanks, Joel

very nice job and love the color. Know what you mean about triggering your first paint job. I was a nervous wreck!

So Joe Minn asks do you have your own paint gun? My question: Is that YOUR paint booth!?

Joe asked a few questions as well, to put the whole process in a nutshell ,I chemically stripped the car to bare fiberglas , did all the required bodywork using nothing but Vette panel adhesive filler, blocked it to 120 grit, then applied five coats of black gelcoat, blocked that to 180 grit, then applied two heavy coats of urathane primer ( superbuid 4 to 1 by Evercoat) blocked that straight using a black guidecoat down to 400 grit wet. Then yesterday, applied one good coat of black non sanding sealer. Then two coats of the burgundy base, checked it with a trouble light for complete coverage everywhere, then applied three coats of clear.
I used a gun we had at the shop with a 3.0 tip for the gelcoat and primer, and for the sealer, base ,and clear we had a Sata gun at the shop with a 1.3 tip on it , and it seemed to work very well. All the topcoats were from our local supplier, and were Valspar brand, the sealer , base and clear with the activator and reducer came to almost $ 700.00.

Wow. Beautiful.
Now go ahead and put a scratch in it, an ugly one, somewhere visible, and cry for ten minutes.
That way when you scratch it bolting all the rest of the stuff back on it'll be your second scratch and you won't be so upset!

VERY VERY NICE job!!!!!!!!
Hard to see much going on with the paint but I am sure it is spot-on. But I can see how well you shot the clear and how well it flowed out.
Now the FUN part begins. Sanding and buffing/polishing it and making it look like you dipped it in baby oil.

Kudos to you......my Dad and I painted many cars in the 90's and early 2000's but I haven't been behind a gun since 2012......although I have all of the equipment!
Painting is a TON of work......but very rewarding when finished.....
I sold my 69' 988 Tri-Power vert a few years back......loved that car.....had a saddle convertible top, very upscale looking.
Please post pics of the assembly and big props for your first time!!!!!
