Automatic shifter to look like a manual
Guys I know this is weird one, but you're all a forgiving group so here goes. I have recently changed the automatic trans in my 72 to a 200-4R. I would like to replace the necessary components of the automatic with those for a manual transmission look i.e. shifter boot etc. I have an 8 ball shifter **** in place and like the look of manual shifter consoles better than automatics. I'm not concerned about any indicator to show gear selection. Anyone been weird enough to do this, or know what specific parts I would need?
Thanks Much
Dave

I'm prepping a manual console plate for use with my Auto shifter (I'm working on another item and need the area where the auto-prndl is and also will loose the plastic shifter sliders as well.
So far all I've come across is the new console plate and I had to make a new leather "boot" that fit the plate like a stock 4sp but the neck had to fit the automatic shifter stalk.
If you're installing a different ball, you'll have to deal with the press-down button issue to shift out of park etc, maybe one that has a flush "button" that isn't noticable

Back in '97 I put a 700 in my '72 vette, it was a Muncie 4 sp. I fished around a bit and found a Hurst shifter bar, and topped it with a REAL 8 ball that I machined and inserted a metal part to screw the modified shifter bar into.....it rides on part of the OEM stick shift, including a rod to the trans.....The engine and shift tags were done by a guy who etched/made award plaques....

What are you doing for the shift plate?
This is about the 4th revision of the (manual) shift plate in my 4-speed 80. The raised hump holds neodymium magnets to keep my cell phone secure. I just have to find my roller to paint the letters white.

As long as you're having some fun, you might consider installing a set of Hurst Lightning Rods. I've had them in several H/Os, and installed them in a couple of other applications. They work well and, IMO, are pretty cool too. You can often find them on eBay. I might even have one or two out in the garage in one of the 'boxes of stuff'. :-)

Thanks M. I have an adapter on a converted 8 ball that allows the detents by pushing down on the ball. I just ordered a 4 speed boot with the intent to integrate it to the automatic shifter. What modifications did you have to do to the boot to get it to work with the automatic shifter? Thanks again

You will need to find a 4 speed shifter plate. I bought an automatic one off ebay and had to cut the center out of the shifter hole to get it to fit a 4 speed. BUT it wont be as deep and have the room to bolt the shift boot to. Im experimenting with an old Hrst V gate 2 shifter so I dont need that boot anyways. I think tahts all you need to do other than the shift handle. If the top ball unscrews yo can machine the top to fit the T handle and I think someone above found the shift **** for you. I followed that link, heres the catalog http://lokar.com/catalog/#page=1

You could have a hurst shifter arm welded to the auto assembly. Then cutout your console for a shifter boot which would cover any weld work. Your only issue would be releasing the trans from park. On the stock shifter you have to push a button.

I had an 8 ball but was to hard to get the button down to make it flush.
At work i had access to our machine shop, so just cut the slider thing out and added a stick shift boot, and modded an old B/M handle.
