Default Barn find LT-1 ?

Well it was stored in a barn at least!

I've been looking around since I sold my 1972 coupe a few weeks ago and I was targeting a 66 or 67 big block without any luck. So I turned my attention back to C3's and checked out the for sales on the Forum.

Thursday Mr. postman delivered my Corvette News April edition and thumbing through came across a 1971 LT-1 for sale not too far from me. I've only ever seen one other (than my current MM 1971 LT-1) in the UK, a white one that needs a lot of work then this yellow one pops up. So I've been to see it today and agreed a sale price that we're both ok with (read I got a bit off!) So now I have two 1971 LT-1's but quite a bit of work ahead of me.

This is my current:

And the Yellow one that should be and will be again - Orange

I'm super excited to get stuck into it but there is one 'big' issue. Some BOZO cut the front fenders to accommodate bigger wheels & tyres and this will have to be sorted out. It's going back to orange so the body work can be done at the same time. Replacement lower fenders or a local repair ? Ideas please would be very appreciated

Like it in yellow! LT1s are just cool...factory solid lifter, nice high rise and a holley.

I would do the repair if there is no other damage but that’s just my .02 worth.

At least they cut it neatly

Might take a little fiberglass skill and effort to make that a neat repair. A graft would be an option but would almost certainly leave a graft seam. The decision might depend or your or your body shops skill level.

CONGRATS....
I have some pictures of a 72 ZR1 in Ontario Orange which was at the NCRS regionals this past weekend. The paint on this car was researched 9 months prior to painting... I cannot tell you how absolutely perfect the texture and sheen is on this car... I know how it was done as I spoke at length to the owner, who also has a collection of low mileage original paint C3 Bumper cars. If you throw the "color standard" chip on this car it will take you A LONG WHILE to find it.

I agree with Rescue Rogers. That's how they looked when they came from the dealer. After years of polishing, mine has evened out quite a bit and is now much shinier. Many of the guys on here aren't old enough to remember how they originally looked. That's why I laugh when I see the base coat/ clear coat paint jobs on some of these Vettes that look like liquid paint. They never did look like that.

Another couple of the paint texture... again I cannot express how many times I walked around this car before asking a Master Judge for 70-72's... and the only reason I questioned the paint was the lack of checking, which is what I stated prior to asking.

Thanks firstgen, those pics reaffirm my wish to go back to Orange. It was owned by an American living in Scotland and was dressed up like so. It had a body off in 1998 and I have a pile of pics. Shame that the only original documents are the owners handbook and a partial tank sticker. There's also a finance agreement for the original sale showing 36 x $163.04 @ 12.8%

As soon as I wiped the paint of the pad I knew it looked right

The earliest I can get it to my place is next weekend and first order of business is to steam clean it then get it mechanically sound enough to use then think about body & paint. It has the dreaded headlight support rivets showing through as well to deal with.

Well, I managed to get it delivered yesterday but not without issues. The first delivery truck was stopped for a roadside inspection and stopped from continuing! Hastily arranged an alternative and it turned up at 10 pm. A quick bath then put to bed.

Now a plan to get cracking on all the work required.

first you need to clean and organize that garage!!! I see at least 5 bins on your shelf that arent labeled. What kind of show are we running here,..... SHEESHHHH!!!!! And that carpet mat has 2 pieces of lint on it. I just dont know what people are thinking know a days. And another thing.........wait a minute, that place is gorgeous, its my garage that looks like a bomb hit it and has tools and parts everywhere........never mind, move along, nothing to see here just a beautiful garage with 2 awesome corvettes living in it. Thats 2 LT1 Corvettes living in it. Wow I made some bad life choices somewhere........

Good job, yo are a lucky man

Very good of you to say Mr. Rogers! Lucky that the wife unit doesn't object to the madness. As for mess, through the door at the far end is where all the mess happens and with the aforementioned wife being into arts, crafts and furniture restoration, it's worse in there than any bomb strike despite my best efforts to clean up behind her...

I waited a long time to get my Stingray and now I'm very fortunate to have two LT-1's but the yellow fellow needs a lot of work despite its outward appearance but that's half the fun. I think!

NO FAIR/JK

What is it with LT1's that one is rarely enough? At the NCRS regionals all of the other LT1 owners had at least 2 of them... one guy had 50 corvettes and of those 3 are LT1's!

I am going to look at a Ontario Orange over Saddle 72 LT1 - which has a big block in it... all I can think is it sounds like a perfect base for a ZR1 clone to ME!!!!

That would be sweet.

Been tearing into the car and cleaning it up to see what has to be replaced, refurbished etc and it's come up surprisingly well. The bad news is that two well known restoration shops have both quoted in excess of £20k ($26k) for paint and said that that cost is a baseline and will rise. This is not happening but on the flip, the yellow has grown on me. Honest!

Ya know what 'they' say, "If ya gotta ask, ya can't afford it." I'm quite glad mine was painted 30+ years ago.
