Ouch! shipper damaged my '69 L46 Convertible
damaged fender
Been looking for a Lemans Blue, Blue interior '69 Convert. Found one in Florida with matching numbers throughout and hardtop. No hit body. Decent #3 car. The Shipper severely damaged the drivers side front fender and denied it. I have proof it left in undamaged condition. The insurance adjuster was out today. He appraised the damage at about $1900 and said there is a $1000 deductible so my payment would be about $900. There is no way I am settling for that. Not sure what to do next. Anyone else been in a similar situation? I may get a lawyer and go to court, but would rather receive a fair settlement. Curious as to what you think the value deduction would be for a now a fender repair and what the repair should cost from a competent shop.

Sorry to hear about the damage. When I shipped a car from Tampa to Miami last May, the shipper looked over the car for any damage, made any notations, and we both signed the paperwork. There should be paperwork confirming the condition of the car when picked up, and with the car when delivered.
I only gave the shipper 1 key and I kept the other keys, 25 years of paperwork, original dealer books/manuals/brochure/window sticker and sent everything to the buyer once the car was delivered.
Again, everything should have been noted on the bill of lading.
Good luck.

The driver barely spoke English, I could not understand anything he said. He provided no bill of lading. I have several pictures of it before it was shipped with no damage. I never should have paid him.

I shipped two bikes to West coast. I took lots of photos to send to buyer. When picked up the shipper took lots of pictures and my signature was on paperwork authenticating their condition at that time.
I also took photos of them strapped down in the truck.
Good luck.

$1900 in damages?
Your entire front end is going to need body work and paint. 1900 bucks isnt going to come close. You should call the insurance adjuster and politely INSIST that he meets with you do discuss how much thats really going to cost to repair. Also, ask for his managers name and phone number.
My brother is an insurance rep for a large lizard like company. He tells me time and again that if a customer has a legitimate balk with paid time and pushes it up the ladder, they usually win.

1900? Slap some glass on the back. Bondo up the front. Sand it down and match the paint. Most butcher job in the world and it is more than 1900.

lol the adjuster just gave a price for a new aftermarket bolt on steel fender and respray at a cheap shop. he thinks its the same as a 2003 toyota. he doesnt know crap..
looks like someone dropped a car on it. get estimates at specialty shops. they need to dissasmble the front bumper trims and sides. cut out repair sections do the body seams and underfender. maybe pull the hood. prep the entire front end for a big ole blend paint job and clear Entire panel. prolly 5-6k in california.
a crappy shop/quick fix will slap down the panels and hope they stay down. grind down loose fibers and fill in the gaps. mask all the trim and blend the clear at around the headlight area. theyll use crappy paint, and itll start to lift and fail in about 3 years. prolly about 2k

I don't get it. When the shipping company damages something they are supposed to cover the whole thing from their insurance, not you. I must be missing something here... You actually paid them after delivery of that??

$1,900 worth of damage? I don't think so. Get a real adjuster that knows Corvette's, not a collision hack. My 1970 Corvette was bumped by a truck one morning before going to a show. What you see in the picture is $4,900 worth of damage. That's what the Insurance Co.actually paid me. Yours is ten times worse if not more.

Who was the shipper? My 71 coupe will be arriving in Spain on the 13th. Was trucked to Houston from Dallas. The dealership to videos of the car leaving the dealership. The Shipping company, Schumacher, took lots of photos when they received the car in Houston. All nicks, dings and imperfections were noted on paper work before placing the car in the container.
I hope when the car arrives it doesn’t have any damage but if it does everything is well documented and I have insurance...
I researched shipping companies as much as I did the Corvettes I was looking at... Hope it all works out for you.

I almost threw up when I saw your picture of the damage. I have been quite fortunate with my cars and have shipped or had shipped four of them to date without damage. I'm sorry to see this has happened and I would suggest you have a serious claim to process here. I would not start the process of repair until you sort out who is going to pay for what on this one. Good luck to you, sorry to see this happened, feeling a little sick to my stomach right now.

If you paid with a credit card call your company and explain the situation, they might put a hold on the payment forcing the shipper to sort this mess out.

No way that's being fixed properly for $1900 and you say it was a no hit car prior to that so surely you should get diminished value as well ?

Damn I'm sorry to see that. Was the driver of the shipping truck Russian?
I'm in the insurance business, Director of claims/ western operations. Just a quick estimate I wrote was about $5500.00. The repair shop of course has the fender repairs, will need to blend the entire front end to include the front surround, into the right fender and the hood. Since the fender repairs will be close enough to the LF door, that door will need blend time too.
Then we have R/I of everything on the front end to include bumper, lamps, hood, rocker mldgs, marker lamps and all LF door trim.
Personally I would pursue the claim through my own insurance company. They will then subrogate the at fault party. Choose a very good repair shop that specializes in Corvettes. Obtain that estimate and submit it to your insurance carrier. The adjuster then will meet with your shop and come to an agreement of damage costs.
Not knowing the condition of the paint on the car, only issue I see is matching the color. You will have a beautiful new front end paint that will not be a perfect match with the rest of the car.
Good luck

Let this be a lesson for us all. Use a name brand car hauler. Do not use the cheap fly by night brokers that use whoever will haul it the cheapest. you will be lucky if you get it at all or in one piece.
