to gauges. Are they attached like on distributor and transmission or something more complicated?

there is a clip on the back of the two gauges which holds the cables on. Look at the link below.

Here's a close up. The spring tab there has to be pressed towards the gauge body to release the cable

That was a HUGE help.
I assume then to reattach you just insert the cable and listen for a "click" ?

pretty much, just make sure the cable is lined up into the receiver and press, not sure it it'll actually make a click sound but you'll feel it snap back into place

Im guessing you have a 71. on 68s they are the same as the distributor and tranny
