Flared C3 In Rockford Files S03E13
Was in a typical, made for TV, chase scene with burnouts, power drifts and Rockford pulling his usual J-turn.

Looks like a studio customized 73; flares, paint, tail lights. Note the small nerf bars framing the front license plate. Also the Goodyear slicks all around.

Sort of incongruous.
It looks funny to see these 40 something guys in suits driving a car that just screams 20 year old kid.
I'll bet it probably belonged to a production assistant or somebody's kid who asked to have it in the show.

Here is a pic (sorry for poor quality, taken from a VERY bad video clip) of Bixby's '74 Corvette from The Magician TV series. Note the unusual head rests. Anyone seen anything like these before? I have not.

Team Owner
GM was a sponsor on several of these shows, so their product was used per some contractual agreements. James Garner was an accomplished road racing enthusiast/driver and probably had his hand in making decisions as to what 'chase' cars were used on the Rockford Files.

I went to the BAR website and that plate "923 AUN" does NOT show up as ever being smogged(but I think they only go back as far as 1996). I can look up my old cars (of those the first I smogged in ~1985) and the oldest smog tests I can find are for 1996....... so this thing did NOT make it to getting smogged in 1996. Either went out of state, no longer ran, or changed plates.
That "SPIRIT" plate ended up on a Nissan and a Toyota and I can see smogs between 1998 and 2020.

Hmmm?
Maybe the 923 AUN plate was just a prop plate similar to Rockford's 853 OKG plate which was also a prop made for the show, rather than a real, registered California plate.
The car has different prop plate "CLEO" in the earlier blaxploitation film.
Cheers, Greg

Hey Greg......I've been trying to figure out those head rests too.
Something GM that's maybe post '65 but pre '70?
I dunno....
