I left mine on, But it has never held a spare tire since I bought the car back in '86, but it does carry a twelve pack of my favorite adult beverage with ice to car shows
Being the gas tank is directly above the tire tub, kinda hard to Bubba a totally new concept when the tub is held @the back by (2) drop down studs and a single lock @ the front

I suggest a local corvette dismantler/part seller. I was installing my new tub (I had it for 30 years just laying around) so I removed everything to clean and paint and whatnot. Nobody sells the "lid" new for the spare and mine has been broken for ages..... I ended up going to local corvette parts dismantler/seller and he had all kinds of stuff.... I could have bought everything there if I needed it. He let me have my pick of all the lids he had stacked up.
That's my suggestion and while I was at it I cleaned and painted the frame and stuff on the underside.

Thanks, I know I can source one...we’ll see what I come up with.
was thinking plastic wrapped wire rope and a skinny aluminum rim - of course it would have to be secure.
maybe I can get the winch type from a pick up mounted...
would be kind of nice to check psi by thumb gage w/o dropping cover. I am unlucky with flats and don’t want to sit waiting for a truck when I know I can fix it - kind of the saga of my car

.....and here is the answer as to how things are mounted. Easy-peasy.... Mine does NOT have the locking case/cover/assembly (items #10 & #11). Pretty sure it's not worth re-inventing the wheel to fabricate a different spare tire carrying unit for your spare.

And run a mini/space saver spare- they do have them in 17" to clear my calipers/rotors- IIRC Chevy Equinox same bolt pattern - I'll have to check offset.
Plus they are cheap at the junkyard.
Probably all in for $50- tire /rim/mount

wont the muffler packs hugging the exposed tire affect it over time? or catch fire if it shifts over like an inch.
trucks with exposed tire have a more space from the tire to pipes.
I have mine but I use it as a trunk, I keep a bag in there with tools, spare hoses, and jumper cables. I run 18s so no spare, just keep a plug kit and tire kit off a challenger cheap and on ebay all day..

Finally! We disagree.
Remember...my project was a basketcase when I bought it...
it would have cost $50,000 to get it back to "original" status.
Maybe it's the Biker gene, but I really like the looks of a clean/painted Vette rear suspension, minus the tub, since I was a kid.
The aftermarket rear suspensions are really sharp looking.
As other members said...a mini air compressor and tire plug kit works well if you delete the spare.
I will search ebay to get one of the "collapsible spare (tire) wheels" to keep my wife calm.

What exhaust? Mine are on the side where Duntov thought they should be- not Ralph Nader!!!

I used to do that- till I broke a rim. The times I did the longhaul -3K miles in a week on the Hotrod power tour- I had a spare AND tools packed in a garbage bag in the tub.

I'm looking at doing a diffuser type cover-sort of simular

I have plenty of room with Allen’s chambered exhaust - no mufflers needed.
